Coming out this week from Fingerprint Releasing & Bleecker Street is Steven Soderbergh‘s psychological thriller Unsane, starring Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins, and Amy Irving.
Sawyer Valentini, a bright but troubled business woman, begins to find out that her past is catching up to her when an estranged boyfriend she once dated starts to stalk her. To ensure her safety, Sawyer signs up for a support group that helps people tackle stalking problems. Unfortunately, Sawyer finds out that she has involuntarily placed herself in a mental institution with strict rules that there should be no contact with the outside world. Alone and trapped against her will, Sawyer must fight her own demons within the twisted asylum as the visions of her stalker begin to take over.
For Jay Pharoah, who is best known for his years on Saturday Night Live and his recent Showtime series White Famous, this is rare position for him to deliver a non-comedic performance. After delivering jokes in Tim Story’s blockbuster Ride Along, Dylan Kidd’s Get a Job, and Chris Rock’s Top Five, this could be the range he needs to get a variety of other work in film.
As for Leonard, who currently appears in Crackle’s StartUp, and whose well-known films include The Blair Witch Project, and Lynn Shelton’s Independent Spirit Award-winning Humpday, this role give him the opportunity to show a side he hasn’t shown in films.
