Jennifer Lawrence is the perfect badass female spy in her latest film “Red Sparrow,” directed by Francis Lawrence from “The Hunger Games.”

The film is based off Jason Matthews’ 2013 novel of the same title. Matthews himself knows a thing or two about being a spy – he was in the CIA for 33 years before retiring.

“Red Sparrow” starts off after an unfortunate incident that ends a Russian prima ballerina’s career. Due to her mother’s health crisis, Dominika Egorova, gets tied up into a sexual manipulating spy service and is turned into what they call a “Sparrow.” Francis Lawrence sheds a light on sexual abuse, violence, and every dark corner in this Russian spy career. It is a modern day Cold War, which is more of a reality now than ever.

“I think it’s clear that the movie reflects the world that we live in today, but there are certain aspects that didn’t feel all that relevant,” Francis Lawrence said. “We never set out to put a political movie by any means.”

Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes assigned to watch over an American spy Nate Nash played by Joel Edgerton. Tides start to turn as she is assigned to become a double agent and work with the Americans while growing feelings for Nash (Joel Edgerton).

“I think Nate is truly a good guy and on the flip side of the men in Jenn’s character’s lives, Nate is someone who wants to be a crusader for a damaged woman, but she doesn’t necessarily need him to get her vengeance,” Edgerton said.

Jennifer Lawrence couldn’t have been in a better role than this empowered woman who takes matters in her own hands and is able to conquer her freedom with the help of no one, but herself. As an actress she took a big risk, from being in “The Hunger Games” series with Francis Lawrence to maturing into this action film that brings her out of her comfort zone.

“He [Francis Lawrence] has known about insecurities around sexuality and my fear of being judged. But what he didn’t expect was me to read the script and actually feel floored by it and feel like it was incredibly empowering,” Lawrence said.

Be sure to catch Red Sparrow March 2nd in theaters.
