Deadline is reporting that Jessie T. Usher has signed on to star in New Line Cinema’s Son of Shaft as the child of the hardcore cop. Usher previously played another on screen offspring as Will Smith’s son in Independence Day: Resurgence.
The site is also stating that Samuel L. Jackson is negotiating a deal to return for the film having starred in the 2000 reboot by John Singleton as the nephew of the original John Shaft, originally played by Richard Roundtree, who is also in negotiations to return.
Usher will play the estranged son of the detective in the film, in which he’s forced to team up with his father. As an FBI agent and cyber expert, the young and old Shafts will butt heads throughout the new film.
Usher currently stars as the lead of the Starz series Survivor’s Remorse, with the fourth season beginning August 20. He was last seen on the big screen as Independence Day: Resurgence as the son of Will Smith’s character from the original film.
Tim Story, best known for Fox’s first two Fantastic Four movies, and the Ride Along and Think Like A Man franchises, will direct the film, which has a script by Kenya Barris (Girls Trip, black-ish).
