Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures has attached Kevin Hart to star in a remake of the 1988 comedy “The Great Outdoors.”
Howie Deutch helmed and the legendary John Hughes-scripted the original film in which a Dan Aykroyd and Annette Bening played a couple whose plans for a relaxing outdoor family camping trip in Wisconsin is imperiled when his annoying in-laws (John Candy, Stephanie Faracy) come to visit.
Randall Green, who recently wrote the live-action “Scooby Doo” reboot for Warner Bros. Pictures, is writing the new version while Michael De Luca is producing for Michael De Luca Productions with Hart through his Hartbeat Productions banner.
The original film drew mixed reviews from critics, with a current score of 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also not much of a box office hit, grossing $41.5 million domestically and $43.5 million worldwide.
Hart is a big fan of remakes. He’s already slated to do the remake of the 2011 French dramedy “Intouchables” with Bryan Cranston. The original won Frenchman Omar Sy a historic César Award for Best Actor (the first by a black actor). Other remakes Hart has done include the upcoming “About Last Night,” and “Death at a Funeral.”
