Original Rent star Jesse L. Martin has joined the swelling cast of NBC’s musical drama for its second season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Martin, who played the philosophical Tom Collins in Jonathan Larson’s award-winning play and reprised the role in the 2005 feature film adaptation, will play Scott Welker, an artistic director at a theater company and a potential love interest to Debra Messing‘s Julia.
He joins a revamped cast that includes Broadway alums Jeremy Jordan, Jennifer Hudson and former Will & Grace star Sean Hayes, among others.
The role marks a reunion with NBC for Martin, who co-starred on Law & Order and The Philanthropist.
