Loving’s Ruth Negga Speaks On Her Oscar Nomination For Best ActressPosted by Wilson Morales

January 24, 2017

Earlier today actress Ruth Negga was among the Academy Award nominees for Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. She was nominated for her role in the race drama film “Loving,” written & directed by Jeff Nichols, and starring herself and Joel Edgerton as Mildred and Richard Loving, the couple behind the seminal 1967 civil rights case Loving vs. Virginia.

The film, which premiered at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival, co-stars Michael Shannon, Nick Kroll, Marton Csokas, Alano Miller, Terri Abney, Christopher Mann, Will Dalton, Chris R. Greene, Winter-Lee Holland, Jon Bass, and Bill Camp.

Here’s what Negga commented on her nomination:

“I am truly humbled by the news this morning, and I thank the Academy for this recognition, which I share with my co-collaborators Jeff Nichols and Joel Edgerton. It has been such an honor to have been given the opportunity to tell the incredible story of Richard and Mildred Loving, who serve as an inspiration that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. The Lovings fought quietly yet tirelessly, and changed the course of American legal history. Today, to be among such extraordinary women – my fellow nominees, my peers with films this year, and the legendary performers whose work of years past has long inspired me…this means a great deal to me.”

Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, were married in June 1958. As a result, authorities broke into their home, arrested them, and they were sentenced to a year in the state penitentiary. This sentence was suspended on the condition that they be exiled from the state of Virginia. Unbowed, the couple spent the next nine years fighting to get home, together.
