March 11, 2011

On March 10th, Sony Pictures and The Film Foundation held a premiere screening of their 4k restoration of Martin Scorsese‘s classic film Taxi Driver in New York City last night at the DGA theater in celebrating the 35th anniversary.

Prior to the screening, there was a discussion between Scorsese and the film’s screenwriter Paul Schrader, which moderated by critic Kent Jones.

In addition to the first ever release of the film on Blu-ray on April 5th, the restoration will be screened in 4k projections at select AMC theaters on March 19th and 22nd, and with new 35mm prints beginning March 18th at the Film Forum in New York.

The film is about an alienated cabbie (Robert De Niro in a captivating performance) driven to violence by loneliness and desperation on the streets of New York. ‘Taxi Driver’ won the prestigious Golden Bear at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1976. Written by Schrader, the film also starred Jodie Foster, Albert Brooks, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, and Cybill Shepherd.
