Miramax, Roadside Attractions Picks Up Obama Romantic Film ‘Southside With You’Posted by Wilson Morales

Miramax has acquired North American distribution rights from prolific independent entertainment studio IM Global to the romantic film ‘Southside With You,’ which made its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and stars Parker Sawyers as the young Barack Obama and Tika Sumpter as Michelle Robinson.
MIRAMAX will partner with Roadside Attractions on domestic theatrical distribution, which will likely be set for late summer 2016.
Written by Richard Tanne, who also makes his directorial debut, the film covers the eventful date in 1989 when a young associate named Barack Obama was trying to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson on a summer afternoon and evening, that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s DO THE RIGHT THING to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.
SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU is produced by Robert Teitel, Tika Sumpter, and Richard Tanne. Executive Producers are Stuart Ford, Matt Jackson, Glendon Palmer, John Legend, Mike Jackson, Carrie Holt De Lama, and Tracey Bing. Legend also produced and performs the end title song for the film, “Start.”
The film was cast by Tracy “Twinkie” Byrd (Fruitvale Station, When the Bough Breaks, Jumping The Broom).
