Nigerian Singer/Songwriter and Actor, Lisa Yaro, Talks Music & Film

Blackfilm.com correspondent Ellen J. Wanjiru speaks with Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer/songwriter, actor and producer Lisa Yaro about her role in the upcoming film ASKING FOR IT, her collaboration with 2 of the biggest Nigerian artists, MAYORKUN for her single “Domitilla” and ZLATAN for her follow up single “YARO,” and curating premium content for her wildly popular YouTube channel.

Her channel has garnered over 120K followers, and 14+ million views and features a collection of her own original composed content from the perspective of a Nigerian American immigrant and entertainer.

Lisa cut her teeth in the music industry by sitting in on sessions and writing for artists and producers. Deciding to do sessions for free, she knew that her hustle and creativity would lead to further opportunities after “paying her dues.” After being introduced to Mýa and requesting a session they became instant friends and continued working together. Lisa’s writing on Mýa’s 2016 album “Smoove Jones” led to her Grammy nomination for her writing and caught the attention of Hollywood powerhouses Will.I.Am, and Jared Lee Gosselin, to name a few.

About ASKING FOR IT: After small town waitress Joey (Kiersey Clemons) is sexually assaulted after a date with her old friend Mike (Casey Cott), she befriends mysterious stranger Regina (Alexandra Shipp). Regina introducers her to The Cherry Bombers, an all-femme gang including Beatrice (Vanessa Hudgens), Angie (Lisa Yaro), Lily (Leslie Stratton), Sal (Radha Mitchell), Jett (Leyna Bloom), Fala (Casey Camp-Horinek), and Rudy (Gabourey Sidibe). All suffering from past traumas, together they fight a misogynistic society by targeting violent frat boys, a corrupt police force of human traffickers led by Sheriff Morel (David Patrick Kelly), and the dangerous alt-right group MFM (Men’s First Movement) headed by Mark Vanderhill (Ezra Miller). As Joey is drawn further into their chaotic world, Sal’s old flame, Logan County Sheriff Vernon (Luke Hemsworth), investigates MFM, leading to a thrilling showdown. Asking For It premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.

The film will mark Eamon O’Rourke’s directorial debut and is produced by Kiersey Clemons, Lee Broda, Ezra Miller, Luke Daniels with Kevin Beer, Savoy Brummer, Lisa Yaro, Sol Guy, and Seema Thakker executive producing.
