Universal Pictures has announced that the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel will be released on February 23, 2018.
Based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham, Steven S. DeKnight is directing the film, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor John Boyega cast in the lead role.
Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost, who was played by Idris Elba in the first film. The 2013 original, which also starred Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman, grossed $411 million worldwide.
Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and del Toro will produce the action adventure film along with Boyega and Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions shingle. Cale Boyter is executive producer.
The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures around the world with the exception of China.
Comingsoon.net has pointed out that Pacific Rim 2 will open just one week after Marvel’s Black Panther is released on February 16. That film stars Chadwick Boseman in the lead role.
