Queen Latifah will play iconic blues singer Bessie Smith in an HBO biopic written and directed by Dee Rees, known for her 2011 film ‘Pariah.’
The untitled film will chronicle how Smith overcame her tempestuous personal life to become one of the most acclaimed performing and recording artists of the 1920s and ’30s, earning the nickname Empress of the Blues.
Based on the life story of Smith and the biography Bessie written by Chris Albertson, the film will be co-produced with Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere’s Flavor Unit Entertainment and Lili and Richard Zanuck’s the Zanuck Company.
While she is currently the host of The Queen Latifah Show, Latifah last appeared in the musical Joyful Noise.
