Deadline is reporting that Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith are set to appear in Malcolm D. Lee’s Girl Trip, reuniting for the first time on screen since they starred in F. Gary Gray‘s 1996 thriller, Set It Off.
Universal Pictures will release the film on released on Friday, August 11, 2017.
When four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.
Regina Hall, who recently starred in Barbershop: The Next Cut, directed by Malcolm D. Lee, will be working with him again on this film. Hall also appeared in Lee’s The Best Man and Best Man Wedding.
Will Packer, via his Will Packer Productions banner, will be producing the comedy. Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver, the same screenwriters of Lee’s Barbershop: The Next Cut, will be working on the film as well. James Lopez, head of motion pictures for Will Packer Productions, will executive produce the new, untitled Girl Trip project.
According to Deadline, “Pinkett Smith and Latifah have been collaborating behind the camera; they produced Secret Life, which stars Latifah, and before they they produced Dear Mama, which Pinkett Smith starred in. They also produce Latifah’s talk show through Overbrook and Flavor Unit. Pinkett Smith moved from the WB series Gotham and most recently completed Bad Moms, which STX Entertainment releases July 29.”
