Queen Sugar Adds Julie Dash To Directing Team With Sharon Lawrence, Alimi Ballard and Margot Bingham Set To Recur On Season 2 Posted by Wilson Morales

Deadline is reporting that Julie Dash has been added to the directing team of OWN”s acclaimed drama series “Queen Sugar,” which will premiere season 2 on the OWN network with a two-night event, launching on June 20 and June 21, at 10 p.m. on both nights.

In addition, Sharon Lawrence, Alimi Ballard and Margot Bingham are set for recurring roles.

The series, created by Ava DuVernay who also executive produces with Oprah Winfrey, chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana. Based on the book by Natalie Baszile, Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Kofi Siriboe star as the siblings.

In Season 2, Bordelon siblings Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) struggle to move forward with their lives as they strive to honor the legacy of their father following his unexpected passing. Together, they must learn to rely on one another as they navigate their tenuous bonds as family. Cast also includes Nicholas L. Ashe (Micah), Omar J. Dorsey (Hollywood), Dondré T. Whitfield (Remy), Timon Kyle Durrett (Davis), Bianca Lawson (Darla), Ethan Hutchison (Blue), and Tina Lifford (Aunt Violet). Additionally, guest star Henry G. Sanders recurs as Prosper Denton.

Lawrence will play Lorna, the mother of Charley Bordelon. Sophisticated, charismatic, and complicated, Lorna is a successful, self-motivated businesswoman who raised her daughter to never settle for second best. Ballard will portray Dr. Robert Dubois, an epidemiologist who works at The Center for American Progress. Sincere, charming and intellectual, Dr. Dubois makes a lasting impression on Nova. Bingham is Tamar Judith, a cool and confident pop singer who crosses paths with Davis.

Dash is best known for the award-winning film Daughters of the Dust, and she became the first African-American woman to have a wide theatrical release of her feature film.

She joins an all-woman directing team that so far includes Kat Candler, DeMane Davis, Cheryl Dune, Aurora Guerrero and Amanda Marsalis.

As well as Winfrey and DuVernay, Monica Macer is also an EP on the Warner Horizon Scripted Television produced series.

OWN, along with “Queen Sugar” producer Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, also announced that Hulu will stream (exclusively) the first season of the series beginning April 21, with subsequent seasons becoming available to stream following their initial season run on OWN.
