Regina King is set to return to the second season of Oscar winner John Ridley‘s hourlong ABC drama American Crime, but this time as a series regular.
Written, executive produced and directed by Ridley and starring Timothy Hutton and Felicity Huffman, ‘ who are also returning, the first season of American Crime’ examined the personal lives of the players involved in a racially charged trial as their worlds are turned upside down.
In a press release given out, Ridley commented, “ (co-producer) Michael McDonald and I couldn’t be more excited to have Regina back for season two of ‘American Crime.’ She’s phenomenal in all regards, and is going to be at the center of a story that deals with physicality, sexuality, and societal boundaries with the same urgency as our first season dealt with race and faith. We’ve been blessed with the opportunity to speak on subjects as no other show does, and a cast which can do so with such a high degree of emotional honesty.”
In season 1, King played played the devout Muslim sister of drug addict Carter Nix, who comes to Modesto in order to help her brother navigate a judicial system that she believes is stacked against him. She appeared in seven episodes in the first season.
TVLine exclusively reported earlier this month, much of the Season 2 action is expected to take place at an elite prep school in the midwest that boasts a disparate student body, including a gay basketball star. According to Ridley, the sophomore season will “deal a lot more with class,” as well as “gender issues, sexual orientation and sexual identity.”
