Gossett’s early life in Brooklyn laid the foundation for a luminous career. A high school injury led him to the stage instead of the sports field, marking the beginning of his journey in acting. His Broadway debut in “Take a Giant Step” received critical acclaim, signaling the emergence of a star. Despite an opportunity to play professional basketball, Gossett chose to focus on acting, demonstrating his passion and dedication to the craft that would eventually lead him to Hollywood success.

His first marriage to Hattie Glascoe was annulled, but it was his marriage to Christina Mangosing in 1973 that blessed him with his son Satie, before the couple divorced in 1975. His final marriage to Cyndi James-Reese in 1987 also ended in divorce in 1992, but not before they adopted their son, Sharron.
