Producers Shonda Rhimes, Besty Beers and writer-director Dee Rees (Pariah, Bessie) are working together on developing a limited series based on Isabel Wilkerson’s 2010 book “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration” for FX, reports Variety.
The sites states that the TV adaptation is in the early stages. of development.
The book chronicles the movement of some 6 million African-Americans from the south into the north and western regions of the country from the period of 1915 to 1970. “Warmth of Other Suns” tells much of the story through the eyes of three characters who made the journey in different decades, including a sharecropper’s wife who left Mississippi in the 1930s for Chicago, named Ida Mae Brandon Gladney; an agricultural worker, George Swanson Starling, who left Florida for New York City in the 1940s; and Robert Joseph Pershing Foster, a doctor who left Louisiana in the early 1950s, for Los Angeles.
Wilkerson, a Pulitzer Prize winner for her work at the New York Times, earned a host of critical kudos for the book.
Rees has her latest feature Beesie, starring Queen Latifah and Oscar winner Mo’Nique, premiering on HBO on May 16. Her debut film Pariah was a hit at Sundance in 2011 and hit theaters later that year.
