Deadline is reporting that Stephan James, star of Barry Jenkins’ upcoming If Beale Street Could Talk, has landed a major role opposite Chadwick Boseman in STXfilms & producers Joe and Anthony Russo‘s action thriller ’17 Bridges.’
James joins a cast that also includes J.K. Simmons, Sienna Miller, Taylor Kitsch, Morocco Omari, and Keith David.
Brian Kirk (Luther, Game of Thrones) will direct from a script by Adam Mervis. The film follows a disgraced detective (Boseman) in the NYPD who is given a shot at redemption. Thrust into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers, he begins to undercover a massive conspiracy that links his fellow cops to a criminal empire and must decide who he is hunting and who is actually hunting him. During the manhunt, Manhattan is completely locked down for the first time in its history – no exit or entry to the island including all 17 bridges. James and Kitsch will play the two suspects on the run.
The Russo Brothers will produce the film with Boseman and his writing and producing partner Logan Coles, while Mike Larocca will serve as the executive producer via their AGBO banner. STXfilms’ Drew Simon and Kate Vorhoff will oversee the film’s production, slated to commence in September.
Besides the Beale film, which premiere last month at the Toronto Film Festival, James will next appear opposite Julia Roberts in the Amazon series Homecoming. His previous credits include Race, where he starred as Olympic hero Jesse Owens, Ava DuVernay’s Selma, and the Fox limited series Shots Fired.
