According to Boxofficemojo.com, Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther has joined Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6m) and Avatar ($760.5m) as the third film to ever top $700 million at the domestic box office.
The film did so as it entered its 25th weekend in release. Black Panther is the first 2018 release to remain in theaters that long as theatrical windows continue to shrink. In both 2017 and 2016 five films remained in theaters for 25 weeks or longer whereas in 2014 and 2013, 11 and 13 films reached that milestone or longer respectively.
With a production cost of $200M, “Black Panther”, the Ryan Coogler directed film has grossed $1.346B worldwide, making it the 9th highest grossing film ever.
Starring Chadwick Boseman stars as T’Challa/Black Panther alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Florence Kasumba and Sterling K. Brown, the story follows T’Challa as he is sworn in as king of Wakanda, a cloaked, technologically advanced nation in Africa that is home to the exotic metal vibranium, the source of Black Panther’s powers.
