January 20, 2016
Array and Indiegogo today announced the beginning of their collaboration to amplify the awareness and support of independent films by content creators of color and women filmmakers around the world. At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Array and Indiegogo will convene an intimate gathering of fifty influencers representing both the creative and business sides of the industry, with the goal of discussing the state of varied voices in film, and brainstorming ideas for the future.
With already aligned missions, these two organizations will continue to focus their advocacy efforts on supporting artists and achieving equality in filmmaking. The Array Soiree will provide an empowering opportunity to connect and activate this collective around the democratic advancement of diverse storytelling in independent film.
“On behalf of ARRAY’s Maverick and Rebel members and our Founding Leaders, I’m thrilled to hold hands with our friends at Indiegogo on this intimate gathering of film artists and advocates focused on community and change,” explained Ava DuVernay, ARRAY Founder. “Indiegogo has proven to be the perfect, like-minded partner in this experiential endeavor at Sundance to asset the importance and beauty of filmmakers of color and women filmmakers.”
“We started Indiegogo because we believe every idea deserves a chance at success and every person deserves the opportunity to fund what matters to them – whether that’s a story that’s never been told or a film from a voice that’s never been heard,” said Danae Ringelmann, Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer of Indiegogo. “We’re so excited to start working with Array in our mutual mission to empower all aspiring filmmakers get a chance to bring their ideas to the screen.”
Indiegogo served as the platform that helped launch Sundance breakouts Justin Simien (DEAR WHITE PEOPLE) and Lily Amirpour (A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT). It continues its partnership with the Horizon Award and with AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women, which has helped bring dozens of projects to life including director Pippa Bianco’s short film “SHARE” which went to Cannes in 2015 and won the Cinefondation Award. This year’s Sundance Film Festival features Indiegogo alumni including Don Cheadles’ MILES AHEAD and Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Almendras’ AQUI NO HA PASADO NADA among several others.
