Tonight the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted the unmatched star studded evening of events we’ve all held our breath for. A big night for Ruth Carter who picked up her second Oscar win for Costume Design on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But for many, the night was full of major disappointments amongst the celebration of accomplishments. While we must take time to honor those who received praise for outstanding works in films that moved audiences across the globe; we also have to make note of the groundbreaking performances that went without recognition via the prestigious golden statue.

Snubs and Performances
The 2023 Oscars flew outside of the traditional structure with many of the nights winners not receiving honors at preceding shows like the Golden Globes and Sag Awards. Probably the biggest upset of the night was Angela Bassett with her second Oscar nomination with the Best Supporting Actress nod. Bassett was previously nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It.
Bassett was later seen holding the hand of Oscar hopeful Austin Butler for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the biopic Elvis directed by Baz Luhrmann. Butler, similar to Bassett in 1994, lost despite a super human transformation into Elvis from dialect to body movement. Both Bassett and Butler won the 2023 Golden Globe for the respective Oscar nominations.
Another notable, but expected, loss was Rihanna for her song “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which the stunning and pregnant global super star performed after a beautiful introduction from Danai Gurira.

Everything Everywhere All At Once
The biggest winner for the evening was the insanely popular film Everything Everywhere All At Once which took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Directing, Film Editing and Original Screenplay.
The Asian community is celebrating the films big wins along with other notable moments including Best Song going to “Naatu Naatu” from Indian film RRR, Michelle Yeoh being the first Asian American winner in the Best Actress category and a moving speech from Best Supporting Actor winner Ke Huy Quan.
