Denzel Washington in The Equalizer

Back in early 2014 when the film was still going through test screenings and scoring through the roof before the film has been released, Sony was looking to do sequel to director Antoine Fuqua’s thriller The Equalizer, starring Denzel Washington.

Now, after the film was released last fall and grossed $101M domestically and about $192M worldwide, they have officially given the sequel the green light.

Sony is bringing back screenwriter Richard Wenk for the follow-up, reports The Wrap.

The film is an adaptation of the 1980s TV show of the same name and stars Denzel Washington as a retired intelligence officer who gets embroiled with the Russian mob after displaying an act of kindness towards a young prostitute (Chloe Grace Moretz). Also starring in the film were Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, Haley Bennett, and Marton Cskokas.

It’s not certain whether Fuqua will be back to direct the sequel but he and Washington will be teaming again on the Magnificent Seven remake,
