Entertainment Weekly has released the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ remake of “Miss Bala,” starring Gina Rodriguez.
The film is an adaptation of the Mexican entry for best foreign-language film at the 84th Academy Awards in 2011. It centers on a woman named Laura Guerrero who, along with her friend, enters a Miss Baja beauty pageant. She witnesses during rehearsals a gang killing Drug Enforcement Administration agents and nightclub-goers, which turns her life upside down. She’s then kidnapped by the men and forced to work for them in the deadly drug war.

In this film, Rodriguez’s character travels to Tijuana after the death of her parents, and while at a club, a group of criminals come in with guns and kidnap her best friend. However, the American police are on to her, and Rodriguez’s character must play both sides to survive.
Catherine Hardwicke directs the action film that also stars Anthony Mackie and Matt Lauria. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wrote the screenplay.
Kevin Misher of Misher Films and Pablo Cruz of Canana Films are producing the remake with Jamie Marshall, Samson Mucke and Arturo Sampson executive producing.
“Miss Bala” will hit theaters on Jan. 25.
