Among the special presentations at the 21st Urbanworld Film Festival this year is the Alumni Spotlight, which is the 10th Anniversary of Jerry Lamothe‘s Blackout.

Written and directed by Lamothe, this 2007 feature had some familiar faces as well as some newcomers, who would later blossom their careers. Lamothe, whose previous films included Amour Infinity, Nora’s Hair Salon and The Christmas Swap, has also directed episodes (including the pilot) of Bounce TV’s Saints and Sinners.

Blackout will be shown at 9pm on Sept. 23 at the AMC Empire Theater on 42nd and 8th in New York City.

The first 5 requests will receive a pair of tickets for the screening at 9p. Names will be left at the box office. Email at blackout@blackfilm.com

Produced by Tru Life Films and Judith Aidoo and Uptown Movie Network as executive producers, the cast included Jeffrey Wright, Zoe Saldana, Melvin Van Peebles, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Anthony Chisholm, Saul Rubinek, Jamie Hector, Sean Blakemore, Michael B. Jordan, Susan Kelechi Watson, Robert Brickle-Tate, Tobias Truvillion, Prodigy, Omar Scroggins, Ali A. Wahhab, and Turron Kofi Alleyne.

In summer 2003, America experienced the largest blackout in its history—widely reported as peaceful. But in Brooklyn’s forgotten East Flatbush neighborhood, mayhem unfolded when the power shut down. This is the untold story of the blackout—a place where, as night fell, looters emerged, violence surfaced and residents feared for their lives. Jeffrey Wright plays “Nelson” the owner and pillar of the local barbershop. Zoe Saldana plays “Claudine” an ambitious writer for “uptown” magazine.
