The Black Film Critics Circle (BFCC) has voted \u201cBLACK PANTHER\u201d<\/strong> Best Film of 2018, RYAN COOGLER<\/strong> Best Director for \u201cBLACK PANTHER\u201d, VIOLA DAVIS<\/strong> Best Actress for \u201cWIDOWS\u201d and BRADLEY COOPER<\/strong> Best Actor for \u201cA STAR IS BORN\u201d. The announcement was made today by Mike Sargent, co-president, BFCC. Votes were cast and tabulated in NY at the organization\u2019s annual meeting on December 16, 2018.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Recognizing achievements in theatrical motion pictures, the BFCC awarded prizes in 13 categories including best picture, best director, original and adapted screenplay, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best animated feature, best independent film, best documentary feature, best foreign film and best ensemble. Special Signature awards are also given to industry pioneers and rising stars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been a year of significant advancement for story tellers of color\u201d says Sargent. \u201cthe diversity of types of films being made by Filmmakers of color and how well they have been received at the Global box office speaks volumes to antiquated notion that\u201d \u2018black films don\u2019t travel\u2019 or have international appeal\u201d.<\/strong> Sargent continues \u201cMore precisely put, the global success of the black experience as captured on film shows \u2018Black Stories matter.\u201d \u201cCongratulations to all of the winners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year’s BFCC Pioneer Award is given to Writer\/Director\/Producer\/Actor Spike Lee for his immense contributions in Film and Television this year with \u2018Blackkklansman\u2019, \u2018Pass over\u2019, , \u2018Nigerian Prince\u2019, \u2018Tales from the Hood 2\u2019 and the recent \u2018She\u2019s Gotta Have It TV series\u2019\u2019. Lee has proved that perseverance; artistic integrity and an unerring commitment to excellence and social relevance will always yield remarkable results. Since his debut film \u201cShe\u2019s Gotta Have it\u201d and socially relevant narrative film classics like \u201cMalcolm X\u201d, \u201dChi-Raq\u201d, \u201c25th Hour\u201d, \u201cJungle Fever\u201d. To extraordinarily powerful documentaries like \u201c4 Little Girls\u201d and \u201cWhen the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts\u201d Lee continues to prove that film can be a force for activism and expands the boundaries of what black filmmakers can achieve. Spike Lee embodies the very essence of the word Pioneer.<\/p>\n

Rising Star \u2013 Amandla Stenberg<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amandla Stenberg\u2019s acting work in this year \u201cThe Hate U Give\u201d, \u201cDarkest Minds\u201d, \u201cWhere Hands Touch\u201d shows she is an acting force to be reckoned with. The veracity and honesty she brings to her performances shows she will truly be an acting force to be reckoned with in the years ahead.<\/p>\n

SPECIAL MENTION \u2013 Sorry To Bother You<\/strong><\/p>\n

Special Mention goes to “Sorry to bother you” by Writer\/ Director Boots Riley. Based on his original screenplay and starring Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson. This highly original High-concept comedy takes place in an Alternate Present day reality and explores race relations, identity politics, corporate malevolence in the United States. The film is both a scathing social commentary on America\u2019s racism, injustice, and corporate greed, while being laugh-out-loud hilarious. This is truly a film we felt needed special recognition.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2010, the Black Film Critics Circle is a membership organization comprised of film critics of color from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, radio, television and qualifying on-line publications. The organization is dedicated to honoring excellence of professionals in the theatrical motion picture industry in U.S. and World Cinema. Its mission is to celebrate contributions and achievements in film by people of the black Diaspora who work in front of and behind the camera, maintain the integrity of a true Critics organization and advance a collective vision of journalists of the black Diaspora. BFCC assists in the development of new talent in the field of entertainment journalism through educational opportunities, mentoring and strategic partnerships and raises awareness of the significance of black film and black film history as a critical part of film culture and preservation. The organization meets annually in December to vote on the year\u2019s films. BFCC\u2019s Founding Members and co-Presidents are journalists Mike Sargent (WBAI-FM NY\/ARISE.TV), Wilson Morales (Blackfilm.com).<\/p>\n
