The film was scripted and will be directed by <strong>Deborah Riley Draper<\/strong>, whose credits include <strong>Versailles \u201973<\/strong> and <strong>Olympic Pride, American Prejudice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee Will Make You Black follows a smart, funny and naive African American teenage girl finding her voice as she navigates conflicting relationships with her mother, her best friends, and her crushes amid racism, sexism and color-ism in 1960s Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-75292\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 208'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Octavia-Spencer-pic-5-300x208.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Said Spencer, whose last collaboration with Taylor brought her the Oscar for The Help: \u201cThere are so many unheard stories and voices in the African American community that speak to universal themes and the humanity in all of us. And it is equally important to see the complicated relationship between a black mother and her daughter as they try to succeed and assimilate in a change-resistant America.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Union starred in and produced last year\u2019s box office hit <strong>Breaking In<\/strong> and is currently filming her Bad Boys TV spin-off LA\u2019s Finest, on which she is an exec producer.<\/p>\n<p>Spencer, Taylor and Norris previously worked together on three films.
