With so many TV shows of yesteryear getting the green light to come back for a reboot or revival, Blackfilm.com had the opportunity to speak to Kelsey Grammer<\/strong>, who is currently co-starring on FOX’s procedural drama Proven Innocent,<\/strong> but\u00a0was the executive producer to one of the most successful African-American series on TV, Girlfriends<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Created by Mara Brock Akil,\u00a0<\/strong>Girlfriends premiered on September 11, 2000, on UPN and aired on UPN’s successor network, The CW, before being cancelled in 2008 with the final episode aired on February 11, 2008.\u00a0 It had done 172 episodes. The cast included\u00a0Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White, Jill Marie Jones,<\/strong> and Reggie Hayes; also starring Khalil Kain, Keesha Sharp, Kendr\u00e9 Berry<\/strong>, and Richard T. Jones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Over the years, fan have been wanting to see the cast come back for one more season, or one more episode or even a movie, whether it be played on TV on the big screen like Sex In The City.<\/p>\n

“We were about to do the 9th season and we got a few shows in and of course everyone said they were going to go on strike. Then we were out for a year and a half I think. No one was going to retool it after that. It\u2019s a shame because it deserved a proper send-off. Now Tracee (Ellis Ross) is on Black-ish and she\u2019s doing really well. She\u2019s lighting up the sky. She\u2019s a wonderful actress but all the girls are terrific. I was so proud of it.,”<\/strong> stated Grammer<\/p>\n

When asked whether a movie would be easier to do with most of the cast working these days, Grammer replied, “A Girlfriends movie would be fun but you would have to get Mara (Brock Akil) to write it and I\u2019m not sure she\u2019s available right now.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Golden Brooks, while promoting her recent TNT series “I Am The Night,”<\/strong> commented on the comeback most people want. “I probably get like 10,000 comments a week from everyone, including social media, about a Girlfriends reboot. There are different Instagram pages and Twitter pages, just dedicated to the question that you are asking. If it were up to me, or Tracey or Jill or Persia, I think all four of us would say yes, \u2018Let\u2019s do a Girlfiends movie or maybe something for like BET. Mara Brock Akil, Kelsey Grammer and Paramount are the ones that hold the rights. We don\u2019t have any power in that. We don\u2019t have any control. Mara has said that she would do it for the right amount and I have to agree with her. She put her heart and soul in developing all five of these characters, including Reggie. I don\u2019t think she wants to see the story short. I don\u2019t think she wants to do it for less than the number she has in her mind and she deserves that. We deserve that and the fan deserve to see a good production of a beloved show. I know that there have been talks but who knows.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brock Akil is currently the executive producer to The CW’s Black Lightning<\/strong>. Meanwhile, Grammer was recently on The Late Late Show with James Corden discussing a “Frasier” revival.<\/p>\n
