this film impacted your life.\u00a0\u00a0I knew a lot of \u201cRicky\u2019s\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0A character John Singleton created in this ground breaking film that shifted the narrative of black culture and changed the trajectory of black storytelling.\u00a0\u00a0Ricky (Morris Chestnut) represented the good kids who often get caught in the cross fire, by association.\u00a0\u00a0This film, which went on the earn two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Director &#8211; first time ever for a young black filmmaker.\u00a0\u00a0It was the summer of 1991 when the film was released.\u00a0\u00a0The same year of the vicious Rodney King beating at the hands of LAPD.\u00a0\u00a0The 1992 LA Riots jumped off after the officers were acquitted, 1 year after the film release.\u00a0\u00a0John Singleton was right on time and had hit the pulse of\u00a0\u00a0the hip-hop generation.\u00a0\u00a0Boyz, was the Los Angeles John Singleton knew, yet he extracted it&#8217;s essence and placed it on screen with beautiful imagery of the black experience in America.\u00a0\u00a0The hood.\u00a0\u00a0The struggle.\u00a0\u00a0The trauma.\u00a0\u00a0The dysfunction and the love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AE4BdijGtu4\" width=\"580\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-129351\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 243 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/John-Singleton-2019-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Singleton captured the plight of the young black American male and the women who love them.\u00a0\u00a0His introspective lens took us into the deep crevices that no one would dare visit.\u00a0\u00a0A place we\u2019d yet to see as a culture in black film, and probably, never will.\u00a0\u00a0A history maker.\u00a0\u00a0His work was exemplary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">With care, compassion and grace \u2014 John Singleton brought characters to life that were relatable, honest and authentic; giving the voiceless a sense of agency, while giving outsiders a glimpse of a Los Angeles that would be swept under the rug, if not for N.W.A.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-129350\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 269 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Higher-Learning-Lawrence-Fishburne-Ice-Cube-and-John-Singleton-269x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">\u201cStraight Outta Compton\u201d, the debut album from N.W.A (1988) unleashed the undercurrent of black life on the streets of LA [and] the battle between young black men and the LAPD.\u00a0\u00a0Before social media, viewers were devastated by the brutal beating of Rodney King caught on video, long before #makethisgoviral became the breaking news of social media.\u00a0\u00a0John Singleton captured the tension of a city and placed it on film (like N.W.A placed the injustices on wax).\u00a0\u00a0John Singleton was the N.W.A of black film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-132302\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 189'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boyz-n-the-Hood-2-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Boyz N The Hood was our \u201cStand By Me\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Yet, coming-of-age in black reality is the stench of death lingering around the corner, and dead bodies found on train tracks by young black boys who didn\u2019t have playgrounds.\u00a0\u00a0Mothers faced with the fear of losing their sons to gun violence daily, now played out in a fictional film. However, Singleton and his cast had already beat the odds \u2014 in a world where most black men growing up in the hood are afraid they won\u2019t see 21 \u2014 these guys were making a movie defying the limitations of systemic racism and poverty plaguing our communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-132303\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 203 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Baby-Boy-poster-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Boyz N The Hood was the precursor to the LA Riots while his follow up film \u201cPoetic Justice\u201d was the smoke settling.\u00a0\u00a0Those two films gave birth to \u201cBaby Boy\u201d\u2026a story about a black man (\u201cJody\u201d portrayed by Tyrese) who never had the opportunity to grow up in the inner city because his youth was snatched away from him.\u00a0\u00a0These three films were his trilogy of the hood experience in America.\u00a0\u00a0John Singleton knows the story of the young, black male inside\/out and he told it from a place of unadulterated truth and with heart.\u00a0\u00a0His lens created a pathway through the vicious cycle of systemic racism and how it impacted lives in neighborhoods trying to rise out of the ashes of it\u2019s traumatic past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">\u201cFrom the cradle to the grave, life ain\u2019t ever been easy\u2026living in the ghetto\u2026\u201d<span class=\"x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>John Singleton\u2019s movies were the soundtrack to our lives in the 90\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YNiX70sA7uE\" width=\"580\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-129346\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 222 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Poetic-Justice-Joe-Torrey-John-Singleton-Tupac-Shakur-Regina-King-Janet-Jackson-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Singleton gave a lot of first time actors their big break:\u00a0\u00a0Ice Cube, the late Tupac Shakur, Regina King, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Taraji Henson (and the list goes on).\u00a0\u00a0He had an eye for iconic talent and memorable characters.\u00a0\u00a0These fresh new faces coming up in the business would go on to become Oscar winners and some of the most prolific vessels of story tellers for our generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">With any great visionary, comes prophesy, and like Ricky, our beloved Tupac Shakur was tragically taken from us.\u00a0\u00a0Too young, too soon.\u00a0\u00a0The proliferation of gun violence that effects our communities had hit home.\u00a0\u00a0The black community-at-large grieved.\u00a0\u00a0Again.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0A new generation of youth had lost one of their leaders, like our parents and grandparents\u2019 generations before us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y3w08wOr1K0\" width=\"580\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-132304\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 186 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Filmmaker-John-Singleton-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Born in 1968, the year Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, one may wonder if John Singleton was given the mantel to tell the story of the plight of Black and Latinx males.\u00a0\u00a0Of brotherhood.\u00a0\u00a0Of the struggle.\u00a0\u00a0From \u201cIllegal Tender\u201d to \u201cFour Brothers\u201d, to evolving to produce \u201cHustle and Flow\u201d and \u201c2 Fast 2 Furious\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Singleton made movies for a new generation and evoked empathy from his audience, no matter the background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">His characters like \u201cDoughboy\u201d, \u201cLucky\u201d \u201cTre\u201d, \u201cFranklin\u201d \u2014 relatable, young, gifted and black men are just trying to make it by any means necessary; in a country with the deck stacked against them \u2014 whether through higher learning or the streets.\u00a0\u00a0Some make it out alive, some don\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-129347\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 291 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Janet-Jackson-and-John-Singleton-291x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">A graphic artist created an image of Boyz N The Hood, which became the sympathy card, offering condolences and reflection for the untimely death of Nipsey Hussle (March 31, 2019).<span class=\"x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This photo, posted by John Singleton himself on his IG account, dated April 1st with a caption that simply says: \u201cNo words\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">\u201cNeighborhood Nip&#8221;, the neighborhood superstar, who everyone had high hopes for, snatched from his community.\u00a0\u00a0His family; just like the fictional character Ricky.\u00a0 The murder was senseless.\u00a0\u00a0Tragic.\u00a0\u00a0A thin line between art and life had crossed, and as a community we are still grieving that great loss, and now we must grieve John Singleton.\u00a0\u00a0A prolific scribe and visionary.\u00a0\u00a0Gone. Too young.\u00a0\u00a0Too soon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-129348\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 193 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/John-Singleton-and-Regina-King-attends-the-2013-Vanity-Fair-Oscar-Party-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">How long must the black community mourn untimely deaths? From gun violence to strokes caused by trauma and stress \u2014 pain and struggle.\u00a0\u00a0According to the CDC \u201cAfrican American men are at greater risk of having a stroke than any other group of men in the United States.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0And according to the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, \u201cAfrican American men are twice as likely to have a stroke as their white adult counterparts. Further, black men are 60 percent more likely to die from a stroke than their white adult counterparts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">At the young age of 51, John Singleton died of a massive stroke.\u00a0\u00a0Yet, his death and body of work is in mark step with the current climate we\u2019re in.\u00a0\u00a0America\u2019s current reality played out on the streets, in front of cameras, as young black men die at the hands of crooked cops and vigilantes.\u00a0\u00a0From Trayvon Martin, Freddie Gray, Tamar Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Philando Castile and Sandra Bland.\u00a0\u00a0The black community is still mourning from past to present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-132228\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/John-Singleton-2019-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">#ICantBrreathe isn\u2019t just a hash tag.\u00a0\u00a0We, as a black community identify with the feeling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">When the news began to spread about John Singleton\u2019s stroke, my heart would skip a beat every time I saw a social media post.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Not today.\u00a0\u00a0Not again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Singleton came into our lives through cinema, and he had us all at: \u201cYou got a problem here?\u201d\u2026a turning point in Boyz N The Hood, when Ice Cube\u2019s portrayal of \u201cDoughboy\u201d showed his heart and his protection for his boys \u2014 in the hood, and his brother, Ricky.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-132305\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boyz-n-the-Hood-3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">Singleton had our hearts when Ricky and Doughboy\u2019s mother blamed Doughboy for the death of his brother.\u00a0\u00a0He had our hearts, the moment \u201cFurious Styles\u201d (Laurence Fishburne) stepped on the scene to educate his son \u201cTre\u201d and the homeboys about gentrification and the importance of being an upright man.\u00a0\u00a0John Singleton pulled our heart strings when he displayed the raw, unhinged portrayal of malicious cops and what our sons, brothers, uncles and fathers experience for just breathing, black.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">John Singleton showed us Black Lives Matter long before it was a hashtag and a movement by taking control of his vision and his images.\u00a0\u00a0He created a world with his point of view, showing the soul and harsh reality of South Central and beyond, and his stories reverberated from the East to the West Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-132306\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Stephanie-Allain-and-John-Singleton-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">From the moment John Singleton pitched Boyz to Producer Stephanie Allain, it was on!\u00a0\u00a0Together, they made a classic that will forever beat in our hearts and etched into the fabric of our cultural landscape.\u00a0\u00a0He maintained his vision from the start, and when the studios didn\u2019t want to green light his reality, he put up his own money.\u00a0\u00a0He believed in his stories, in new talent and emerging filmmakers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\">May we continue to celebrate his memory and say his name.\u00a0\u00a0John Singleton was one of the real ones.\u00a0\u00a0An \u201cOG\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He is legend.\u00a0\u00a0And he left us with a legacy of love letters and moving images for the culture.\u00a0\u00a0May we continue to raise him up, like the 20 minute standing ovation he received at the Cannes Film Festival for his inaugural film, for a job well done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\"><b>John Singleton is survived by his seven children.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\"><b>For
