{"id":134228,"date":"2019-06-19T10:55:58","date_gmt":"2019-06-19T14:55:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/?p=134228"},"modified":"2019-06-20T01:07:32","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T05:07:32","slug":"pose-director-janet-mock-signs-landmark-overall-netflix-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/pose-director-janet-mock-signs-landmark-overall-netflix-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Pose Director Janet Mock Signs Landmark Overall Netflix Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-134230\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Janet-Mock-3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/tv\/features\/janet-mock-netflix-deal-pose-1203246917\/\">Variety<\/a> is reporting that <strong>Janet Moc<\/strong>k, \u201cPose\u201d director, producer and writer, has signed a sweeping deal at Netflix, making her the<strong> first out transgender woman empowered to call the creative shots at a major content company.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three-year multimillion-dollar pact gives the streaming giant exclusive rights to her TV series and a first-look option on feature film projects.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-84701\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Netflix-logo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement, Mock will serve as an executive producer and director on Ryan Murphy\u2019s forthcoming Netflix series \u201cHollywood.\u201d Despite being part of the Netflix family, Mock will be allowed to continue as a writer-director on Murphy\u2019s FX series \u201cPose,\u201d an LGBTQ drama set in New York City\u2019s competitive ballroom scene.<\/p>\n<p>The Netflix deal will enable Mock to create programs that employ and highlight communities that have historically been ignored by Hollywood \u2014 including the intersectional space Mock herself occupies, as a woman of color and a highly visible trans person.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-134229\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 150'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Janet-Mock-2-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAs someone who grew up in front of the TV screen, whether that was watching talk shows or family sitcoms or VHS films, I never thought that I would be embraced,\u201d<\/strong> says Mock. <strong>\u201cAnd more than embraced. Given not just a seat at the table but a table of my own making.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mock hopes the deal <strong>\u201cwill be a huge signal boost, industrywide, to empower people and equip them to tell their own stories.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-134231\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 199'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Janet-Mock-Head-Shot-300x199.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She is interviewing creative executives for her yet-to-be-named production banner. Projects in development include a college-set drama following a young trans woman, a series about New Orleans after the abolishment of slavery and a reboot of a classic sitcom.<\/p>\n<p>Mock, 36, was born in Hawaii and transitioned as a teen. She wrote a memoir in 2014 (which she plans to adapt) that was hailed as the first mainstream account of a young trans person\u2019s journey. She worked for years as an editor at People magazine, and came out as trans in a 2011 article for Marie Claire.
