This fourth episode begins with Rue meeting with her NA sober coach Ali who compares her feelings for Jules to the euphoric feeling she has while on drugs. Rue narrates the backstory for Jules who is a transgender teen. We learn that Jules\u2019 mother had her committed to a mental hospital when she was eleven-years-old.
\nThe little bit that they showed at the psychiatric hospital was so scary that I felt relieved that Jules was able to get out. Her parents eventually divorced and she decided to live with her dad. She started hormone treatments and officially transitioned at thirteen. We saw scenes in earlier episodes when Jules was giving herself hormone injections.<\/p>\n

Rue is trying to stay sober after she made a promise to Jules. She is also on her best behavior as she takes her younger sister Gia along with her former best friend Lexi to the town carnival. This entire episode takes place at the carnival and brings several storylines together. We did see some foreshadowing in a famous scene of Dean Martin running through a carnival in Vincent Minnelli\u2019s Some Came Running. Kat and Jules are having fun on the Ferris wheel. Jules reunites with Rue who is nervous that she destroyed their relationship when she kissed her. I was dazzled by the fireworks displays throughout the episode. Firecrackers light up the background with a kaleidoscope of magical colors as the characters maneuver through the carnival. Director Sam Levinson\u2019s famous father, Oscar winning director Barry Levinson, also utilized fireworks in scenes from his autobiographical Baltimore based film Avalon.<\/p>\n

Jules tells Rue that she can\u2019t be mad at her and things haven\u2019t changed. This makes Rue even happier. Gia notices that Rue is in love with Jules. Lexi seems uncomfortable when Gia tells her that Rue has a new love interest. This is when we see how observant Gia is about everything about her big sister. Nate meets up with Maddy, but he gets angry when he sees that she is wearing a skimpy outfit. Nate yells at her and asks her why she is dressed like a hooker because he can\u2019t introduce her to his parents. This is another example of Nate\u2019s anger issues as he vents at his girlfriend. Nate explains that it is an even bigger deal because his father is participating in the annual chili cook off competition. Maddy gets offended when Nate tells her to go home to change. She finds her friend Cassie who is mad that McKay wouldn\u2019t call her his girlfriend when she is talking to Nate and his father Cal. Maddy finds Fezco to score some Molly from his pop up drug shop at the carnival.<\/p>\n

The episode takes a wild turn when Jules sees Nate with his father Cal at their chili booth. That is when Jules tells Rue that Cal is the older man she had sex with in a hotel room on the night of McKay\u2019s party. Rue doesn\u2019t believe Jules. She tells Jules that Cal is the most powerful man in town. Jules is so frustrated that Rue doesn\u2019t believe her that she decides to prove that she is telling the truth. Jules walks over to the chili table and asks for an order. Cal turns around and becomes as pale as a ghost when he sees Jules. I was screaming to myself each time Jules turned around to show Rue. This tipped off Cal who was shaking in fear as he dropped the first cup of chili. WTF? Rue was trying to figure out where to run or hide, but there was nowhere she could escape from this nightmare. Jules runs back to Rue to explain what just happened but it is too late. Nate was sitting at the booth the whole time like he knew that his father had sex with Jules but he didn\u2019t utter a word. Once Jules left he told his father and brother that she was a student at his high school.<\/p>\n

Maddy and Cassie snort the molly that they buy from Ashtray and wait for it to take effect. Cassie picks up a guy who likes her at school and rides the merry go round. The drugs are so strong that she grinds herself to a gradual orgasm. Maddy becomes unhinged on the drug and confronts Nate\u2019s family. I couldn\u2019t believe how she acted when she knocked over Cal\u2019s award winning chili after he won a big award. Nate grabs Maddy and takes her away from his family to break up with her again. He slams Maddy against a wall and chokes her so hard that she can\u2019t breathe. She has to struggle to get away. Nate tells her that they are through, but she needs an answer about all those juicy dick pics that she found on Nate\u2019s phone. Is he gay? I was wondering if Nate was going to confess everything to Maddy. Was he going to tell her that he took the dick pics of himself to send to Jules? How he was bi-curious and flirting with Jules on Grindr?<\/p>\n

Nate begged Maddy to keep his secret. He told her that he loved her and asked her to promise to not tell anybody. Maddy promised but she didn\u2019t tell Nate that she already told one of her friends that she saw some strange stuff on his phone. The look on Maddy\u2019s face is everything. She can\u2019t help but cry when she sees the red marks that Nate left around her neck after he violently choked her. Jules and Rue as still figuring out what they are going to do about Nate\u2019s dad. Cal goes looking for Jules to force her to keep quiet about their affair. Rue\u2019s mom calls her about Gia because she has gone missing and is not answering her phone. Rue and Jules split up to find Gia.<\/p>\n

Kat Hernandez is still at the carnival when she connects with her school crush. Kat and Ethan flirt and ride a couple of rides together. It seems like this date with her lab partner is going to work out. He suggests that she get a couple of slushes and continue to hang out with him on rides. Kat buys the slushes but then she spots her guy talking to this pretty blonde girl that he appears to be really into. Kat gets mad about being dumped again so she drops the slushes and walks away. I was feeling for Kat. I wanted to cry out for her to come back once I learned that Ethan wasn\u2019t flirting with the girl, who was just asking him a favor. Maybe these two will eventually makeup and get together before the series ends. I think they would make a cute couple. Kat spots a carnival roadie at one of the booths. He goes to take a smoke and she asks for a smoke too. I\u2019ve learned that this is how Kat\u2019s mind works as she is navigating fantasyland. She tells the roadie that she remembers how he went to her high school and used to hookup with all the girls because he had a big penis. He agrees with her that he is well endowed. The roadie asks her how old she is and she tells him that she is sixteen. They have sex right there at the back of the house area and you can see Kat\u2019s face while she is climaxing. The roadie asks Kat if she had an orgasm after they finish, but she pretends that she didn\u2019t and walks away. This is a major turning point for Kat who is becoming more aware of her sexuality with each episode of the show.<\/p>\n

Rue eventually finds Gia who is getting high with the McKay twins who videotaped Kat and leaked it online. We now see the fallout from Rue\u2019s drug problem. Ali asked Rue how her sister was damaged from finding her after a drug overdose. This is the first sign that Gia is acting out. Cal finds Jules and begs her not to destroy his marriage and his family life by telling their secret. Cal admits that he knows Jules told Rue everything about their affair. Jules promises to keep quiet. Nate sends Jules a text message that he wants to meet. Rue takes Gia home and covers for her with their mom. Jules meets with Nate at a secluded area on the water\u2019s edge. Jules gets to the meeting spot first, we see that Nate reveals himself to Jules. We weren\u2019t surprised when Jules freaked out. Remember when Nate threatened to beat up Jules on the first night they met at McKay\u2019s party? Jules ended the confrontation when she pulled out a knife and waved it at Nate before she slashed her wrist. We find out in the beginning of this episode that Jules has a history of cutting her wrists. She slashed them with a soda can when she was first admitted to the mental hospital at eleven-years-old. Nate finally reveals who he is to Jules. He pretends to be interested until he gets close enough to threaten Jules. He tells her that he knows everything about her but that he won\u2019t let her hurt his family. Nate threatens to destroy her future and report her for spreading child pornography if she tells anyone about his father. We were really scared for Jules and thought Nate was going to drown her in the water or really hurt her because he has serious anger issues. Jules does not realize how lucky she was that he let her walk away.<\/p>\n

Jules finds her way back home to Rue. She wants to change the subject about Tyler when Rue asks how things went with their meeting. Rue was so jealous that Jules fell in love. She was doing her best to keep cool about the whole thing. They both get ready and change for bed. When they are lying next to each other it hits Jules that she loves Rue too. We see a montage of Jules interacting with Rue and she is happy to be with her. The episode ends with Jules kissing Rue. Are Jules and Rue going to be a couple? Is it official that they are both in love with each other and have mutual feelings? I can\u2019t wait to see what happens next on this show. Things are heating up and getting even more interesting.<\/p>\n
