{"id":136315,"date":"2019-08-19T09:05:17","date_gmt":"2019-08-19T13:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/?p=136315"},"modified":"2019-08-19T06:22:39","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T10:22:39","slug":"cast-of-david-makes-man-discuss-the-artistry-and-relevance-of-the-own-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/cast-of-david-makes-man-discuss-the-artistry-and-relevance-of-the-own-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Cast of David Makes Man Discuss the Artistry and Relevance of the OWN Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-128950\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 203 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/David-Makes-Man-key-art-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, whenever we hear of a black coming of age story being projected onto television or film, it is filled with stereotypes, two-dimensional caricatures and played out notions of what it is to grow up a poor black boy in America.<\/p>\n<p>Either the protagonist is depicted as a super street smart savant, as was the case with the lead in Fresh, a willing participant in the calamity of his community , as it was with Q-Dog in Menace II Society, or a victim of circumstances that he personally has no role in, as was the case with Ricky in Boyz N The Hood.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike those prior works, each of which has a place of honor in the pantheon of black filmmaking, the characters of <strong>&#8220;David Makes Man&#8221;<\/strong> appear fully realized almost from the moment they glide across the screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-83692\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 242'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/David-Makes-Man-cast-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Recently, Blackfilm.com was invited to a Q&amp;A discussion featuring television and Broadway legend Phylicia Rashad, lead actor Akili McDowell, supporting actor Nathaniel McIntyre and showrunner Dee Harris-Lawrence via phone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;It was amazing watching them tackle the different emotions because that&#8217;s honesty. I was important for me in creating an environment on the set In Florida where they felt free to do their best. Everywhere they went with these characters, I was amazed every day. Not only in the first couple episodes, but throughout the entire 10-hour film. I&#8217;m very proud to be a part of this project, &#8220;<\/strong> said Dee Harris-Lawrence of the performances given by the young actors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-136317\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Tarell-Alvin-McCraney-with-Michael-B.-Jordan-Oprah-Winfrey-and-Akili-McDowell--200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Written by celebrated Moonlight director and writer <strong>Tarell Alvin McCraney<\/strong>, the aesthetics of &#8220;David Makes Man&#8221; are akin to those in the Golden Globe awarded Moonlight.<\/p>\n<p>This is notable because, not only are &#8220;hood&#8221; based tales regularly deplete of any beauty or magic, but the grit and grind of impoverished individuals, and the rundown appearance of said neighborhoods, are often used by filmmakers to provide a false sense of realness to projects that depict black life in the hood. As if long camera pans of dilapidated buildings and hand-to-hand hustling propels the story in any discernable manner. Newsflash, it does not.<\/p>\n<p>However, in &#8220;David Makes Man&#8221;, it is immediately apparent that this depiction of black life would be beautiful, magical and surreal, even amid all the struggles that are taking place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-136318\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Akili-McDowell-in-David-Makes-Man-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Starring actor Akili McDowell as David, a gifted young man who is recently accepted into a magnet school of his academic peers. However, he is but one of a handful of black students to attend the school, one that is filled with miles away from his community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I knew it was going to be something special as soon as I read it and I&#8217;m so thankful that I&#8217;m sitting here today,&#8221;<\/strong> Akili told the gathering of reporters. <strong>&#8220;I see myself in David. He perseveres through everything that he goes through. He has to use the power of imagination to get him through every situation that he comes upon to adapt and be successful. It&#8217;s beautiful. Like poetry on paper.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-136319\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Alana-Arenas-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alana Arenas plays his mother Gloria, a one-time drug addict who is working herself to death trying feed David and his younger brother JG, played by Cayden Williams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Often you see single mothers portrayed as being absent while these young men are out running the street. When, in fact, these women and mothers are working their asses off with two and three jobs, having to go through a lot of stuff, having to deal with public transportation, and still try to keep track of their kids.&#8221;<\/strong> mused Dee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;There&#8217;s an episode titled &#8216;Gloria&#8217;, that&#8217;s just showing her day, and what a single black mother has to go through every day. Just because these boys are in the neighborhood and they seem like they don&#8217;t have parents, they&#8217;re parents are actually trying to keep track of them at every moment. It&#8217;s difficult for them and difficult for the kids.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-136320\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Akili-McDowell-and-Phylicia-Rashad-in-David-Makes-Man-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the very first episode one can see the series isn&#8217;t going to be as simple as &#8220;let&#8217;s get out of the hood&#8221;, a troupe that seemed irresistible to filmmakers of yesteryear. No, &#8220;David Makes Man&#8221; is about a 14-year-old boy whose immediate concern is not only surviving in his habitat, but adapting to it as easily as water takes the shape of its container.<\/p>\n<p>Like the manner in which an amphibian lives, so too does David need to live and thrive in two environments.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-136322\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 195'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/David-Makes-Man-pic-300x195.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Every decision he makes may not be the right choice, but he does it for survival. Not only at school, but at home too. I just feel like that&#8217;s my life because I&#8217;ve always strived to be the best.
