She was 84.<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter, Suzanne Kay, confirmed the news.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll is perhaps best remembered by younger audiences for her role as the conniving Dominique Deveraux on the nighttime soap \u201cDynasty\u201d in the mid-\u201980s. But her first major television assignment was starring as the middle-class single mother Julia in a 1968 sitcom that was praised for featuring an African American in the title role as much as it was criticized for ignoring the civil rights struggle. The series, which ran for three years, was a trailblazer in leading to greater visibility for African American characters on series television.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-138083\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 231 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-5-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The actress characterized by svelte cosmopolitan sophistication had come to television via the musical theater. In the early 1960s she won a Tony as the star of Richard Rodgers\u2019 musical \u201cNo Strings\u201d; the role had been written especially for her. Carroll had previously been featured in supporting roles in such films as \u201cCarmen Jones\u201d and \u201cPorgy and Bess.\u201d She was only the fourth black actress to be nominated for the best actress Oscar, for the 1974 romantic drama \u201cClaudine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-138084\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 298'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-1-300x298.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite her great beauty and undeniable talents as a performer, Carroll sometimes struggled to find roles. When once asked why she did little film work after \u201cClaudine,\u201d she replied incredulously, \u201cHave you seen another film script with a starring role with the character of Claudine? I haven\u2019t.\u201d She told another reporter, \u201cI\u2019m sometimes amazed at how few people realize what it takes for a black woman to survive in this business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-138085\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 282 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-4-282x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carroll made her Broadway debut at age 19 in the Harold Arlen musical \u201cHouse of Flowers,\u201d and though it was short-lived, Carroll\u2019s notices brought her substantial attention and led to her first movie role in \u201cCarmen Jones.\u201d It would be followed by a role in the 1959 film version of \u201cPorgy and Bess.\u201d Carroll made her TV debut on \u201cThe Red Skelton Show\u201d and appeared on other variety programs fronted by Steve Allen, Garry Moore, Jack Paar and Danny Kaye, as well as on \u201cThe Ed Sulivan Show.\u201d She acted in TV dramas including \u201cPeter Gunn\u201d and \u201cNaked City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her early recordings include \u201cPorgy and Bess\u201d with the Andre Previn Trio, \u201cDiahann Carroll Sings Harold Arlen,\u201d \u201cBest Beat Forward\u201d and \u201cShowstopper.\u201d Later recordings include her 1978 tribute to Ethel Waters and 1997\u2019s \u201cThe Time of My Life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-138086\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 240 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-5-1-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Her dramatic film debut came in 1960 in \u201cParis Blues,\u201d opposite Sidney Poitier, followed by a small role in the French drama \u201cGoodbye Again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After having seen her in \u201cHouse of Flowers,\u201d songwriter Richard Rodgers promised he would one day write a vehicle for Carroll. That turned out to be \u201cNo Strings,\u201d the 1962 musical about an interracial romance between a writer and a fashion model.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss Carroll brings glowing personal beauty to the role of the model and her singing captures many moods,\u201d the New York Times said. For her work Carroll picked up the Tony as best actress in a musical.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-138087\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 213 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-Julia-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In between concert and nightclub appearances, Carroll appeared in such film dramas as 1967\u2019s \u201cHurry Sundown\u201d and \u201cThe Split,\u201d made the following year. Then in 1968 she starred in the series \u201cJulia,\u201d a first for an African American actress, following in the footsteps of Bill Cosby a few short years earlier in \u201cI Spy.\u201d Premiering at the height of the civil rights struggle, \u201cJulia,\u201d with its decidedly apolitical, middle class heroine, was attacked by militants for kowtowing to the white community. But Carroll persevered, and the series proved popular in its three-season run, opening doors to other series led by African Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The 1974 feature \u201cClaudine,\u201d which co-starred James Earl Jones, was another rarity, a role for a strong, independent African American woman with deep roots in family. Her work brought Carroll an Oscar nomination as best actress.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-138088\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 212 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-Claudine-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several TV movies followed over the next decade including \u201cDeath Scream,\u201d \u201cI Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,\u201d \u201cSister, Sister,\u201d \u201cMurder in Black and White,\u201d \u201cFrom the Dead of Night\u201d and miniseries \u201cRoots: The Next Generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carroll returned to series television in the mid-\u201980s for \u201cDynasty,\u201d where she stepped out of her nice-girl persona to portray the scheming, deceitful Dominique Deveraux.<\/p>\n<p>She returned to the bigscreen in 1991 for an appearance in musical film \u201cThe Five Heartbeats\u201d and again in 1997 for the well-regarded drama \u201cEve\u2019s Bayou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carroll also occupied herself with theater projects including \u201cAgnes of God\u201d on Broadway in 1982 and \u201cSame Time, Next Year\u201d in Los Angeles; she starred as Norma Desmond in the Toronto production of Andrew Lloyd Webber\u2019s \u201cSunset Boulevard\u201d in 1995.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-138089\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 229 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-Dynasty-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notable telepics later in her career included \u201cHaving Our Say: The Delany Sisters\u2019 First 100 Years,\u201d alongside Ruby Dee, and \u201cSally Hemings: An American Scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carroll recurred on series including \u201cA Different World\u201d (drawing an Emmy nomination in 1989), \u201cLonesome Dove: The Series,\u201d \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d (picking up another Emmy nom in 2008), \u201cDiary of a Single Mom\u201d and on USA\u2019s \u201cWhite Collar\u201d as June Ellington.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll made her first New York nightclub appearance in 40 years with the 2006 offering \u201cThe Life and Times of Diahann Carroll,\u201d drawing an ecstatic review from the New York Times: \u201cAn astonishingly youthful and glamorous 70-year-old grandmother, she presents herself as a down-to-earth realist about the joys and rigors of show business. \u2026 Her air of casually worn grandeur only enhances the unpretentious honesty of her recollections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2010 she appeared, along with a number of other notable women, in the breast cancer documentary \u201c1 a Minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-138090\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 202 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Diahann-Carroll-Peeples-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She appeared in the Tina Gordon Chism-helmed film \u201cPeeples\u201d in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Diahann Johnson hailed from the Bronx and attended the High School of Music &amp; Art in Manhattan, where she also began modeling for African American publications. She enrolled at NYU to study sociology, but after winning recognition on the TV talent show \u201cChance of a Lifetime,\u201d she left school and was booked by Lou Walters (father of Barbara Walters) into the Latin Quarter nightclub for a one-week engagement. The run was expanded to four weeks and succeeded by other nightclub appearances. Then she made her Broadway and bigscreen debuts.<\/p>\n<p>In 1986, Carroll released her frank autobiography \u201cDiahann,\u201d which detailed the triumphs of her professional life and some of the torments of her personal life.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll was married four times, to talent manager and music producer Monte Kay, retailer Fred Glusman, editor Robert DeLeon and singer Vic Damone. Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Kay Bamford, a journalist and screenwriter, and two grandchildren.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>She was the first African American woman
