The film had world premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim.<\/p>\n<p>The film stars <strong>Lovie Simone, Celeste O\u2019Connor, Jharrel Jerome, Gina Torres, Jesse Williams, Henry Hunter Hall<\/strong> and <strong>Evan Roe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-135170\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Selah-and-the-Spades-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the film, five factions run the underground life of the prestigious Haldwell Boarding School. At the head of the most powerful faction \u2013 The Spades \u2013 sits Selah Summers. By turns charming and callous, she chooses whom to keep close and whom to cut loose, walking the fine line between being feared and loved.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-135175\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Selah-and-the-Spades-director-Tayarisha-Poe-2019-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m thrilled that Selah and The Spades has found a home with Amazon Studios, and doubly excited to see the world of The Haldwell School expand and develop in the serial format,\u201d <\/strong>said Poe in an earlier statement.<strong>\u201cI&#8217;d always hoped to work with a company that realized the multi-format potential of this fictional world, and truly we have found the ideal partners with Amazon.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Poe was chosen as one of the 25 New Faces by Filmmaker Magazine in 2015, and in 2016 she received the Sundance Institute\u2019s Knight Foundation Fellowship. In 2017, she was selected for the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs. Poe is a 2017 Pew Fellow and was named one of Variety\u2019s 10 Directors to Watch in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon is also developing the feature as an original series.
