{"id":144901,"date":"2020-06-03T14:49:31","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/?p=144901"},"modified":"2020-06-03T15:58:04","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T19:58:04","slug":"director-steve-mcqueens-two-new-movies-dedicated-to-george-floyd-the-black-lives-matter-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/director-steve-mcqueens-two-new-movies-dedicated-to-george-floyd-the-black-lives-matter-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"Director Steve McQueen&#8217;s Two New Movies Dedicated To George Floyd &#038; The Black Lives Matter Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-85382\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 236 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Steve-McQueen-2018-1-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/06\/george-floyd-black-lives-matter-steve-mcqueen-dedicates-cannes-movies-1202950235\/\">Deadline<\/a> is reporting that director <strong>Steve McQueen<\/strong>&#8216;s two new movies,\u00a0<strong>Mangrove and Lovers Rock<\/strong>, has been dedicated to George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI dedicate these films to George Floyd, and all the other black people that have been murdered, seen or unseen, because of who they are, in the U.S., U.K. and elsewhere. \u2018If you are the big tree, we are the small axe.\u2019 Black lives matter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The films come from the director\u2019s British anthology series <strong>Small Axe<\/strong>, which was previously described as a TV series, but is now an anthology of <strong>five films<\/strong> which will show on the BBC and Amazon Prime.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-137150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Letitia-Wright-in-Small-Axe-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The two films were announced today for Cannes, which hasn\u2019t taken place this year due to the coronavirus but has announced its lineup in a bid to boost the distribution credentials of some of the films.<\/p>\n<p>Each film tells a different story, set within London\u2019s West Indian community from the 1960s to the mid 1980s, whose lives have been shaped by their own force of will despite rampant racism and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-137151\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Malachi-Kirby-in-Small-Axe-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first film, Mangrove, tells the true story of the Mangrove Nine and Frank Crichlow, starring <strong>Letitia Wright<\/strong> (Black Panther), <strong>Shaun Parkes<\/strong> (Lost In Space), and <strong>Malachi Kirby<\/strong> (Black Mirror). The second film, Lovers Rock, tells a fictional story of young love and music at a blues party in the early 1980s, starring <strong>Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn<\/strong> (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I &amp; II), <strong>Micheal Ward<\/strong> (Top Boy), <strong>Shaniqua Okwok<\/strong> (Van der Valk) and<strong> Kedar Williams-Stirling<\/strong> (Sex Education).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-142581\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 169'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/john_boyega-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As previously announced, John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) will also star in one of the anthology\u2019s films, with more details forthcoming. The two films announced for Cannes are due to have a theatrical release in France.<\/p>\n<p>The anthology series is executive produced by Tracey Scoffield and David Tanner for Turbine Studios and Steve McQueen for Lammas Park.
