Brown, John Legend, Leslie Odom Jr., Janet Mock, Kenya Barris and more. The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) handed out 11 awards, two honorary awards, and the inaugural AAFCA ADCOLOR Breakout Creative of the Year award to celebrate the excellence, innovation and diversity in television this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to celebrity presenters such as Octavia Spencer, Rashida Jones and William Jackson Harper, the virtual awards ceremony also celebrated the extraordinary work of our first responders, government leaders, firefighters, reporters, and others from around the country by featuring these local heroes as presenters during the event. A portion of the proceeds from the event were donated to the National Association of Black Journalists&#8217; Covid-19 Relief Fund. The event, hosted by actress\/comedian Aida Rodriguez, was sponsored by Morgan Stanley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notable acceptance speeches include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Janet Mock (Breakout Creative of the Year: &#8220;Pose&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Hollywood&#8221;) \u2013<br>\u201cI create for the girl that once was longing and searching for herself in the creation of others on screen. I hope that my work can be a mirror for her, letting her know that she was and will never be alone again. And this is what stories do. They let us know that no matter how invisibilized, misunderstood, unique and marginalized, we are worthy of being seen, heard and taking up space on screen and in the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Janet-Mock-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-146465\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sterling K. Brown (Best Male Performance \u201cThis Is Us\u201d) \u2013 \u201cI can only represent myself. But I want you all to know that in representing myself, I hope that I do you proud. It is something that is always in the forefront of my consciousness that the representation that I put in front of and behind the camera is one that uplifts, that entertains, that educates and that edifies, not just the human experience, but the black experience as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Kanye-Barris-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-146467\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya Barris (TV Icon Award) \u2013 \u201cBeing able to receive this award means to me that hopefully I have another stage in my career that says I can empower different voices of all different nationalities, ethnicities, and genders to really continue to tell their stories in an authentic way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2nd ANNUAL AAFCA TV HONORS AWARD RECIPIENTS &amp; PRESENTERS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Animated Series: &#8220;Central Park&#8221; (Apple TV+)<\/strong><br>Creator and star <strong>Josh Gad<\/strong> and cast member <strong>Leslie Odom, Jr<\/strong>. accepted the award, presented to them by Oscar\u00ae winning filmmaker <strong>Matthew A. Cherry<\/strong> (&#8220;Hair Love&#8221;) and the <strong>Honorable Hank Johnson<\/strong>, Congressman for Georgia&#8217;s 4th District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Young Adult Series: &#8220;Never Have I Ever&#8221; (Netflix)<\/strong><br>Co-Creators and Executive Producers <strong>Mindy Kaling<\/strong> and <strong>Lang Fisher<\/strong> were joined by series star, <strong>Maitreyi Ramakrishnan<\/strong> to accept the award, presented to them by young actor <strong>Niles Fitch<\/strong> (&#8220;This is Us&#8221;) and <strong>Cherelle Barsdale<\/strong>, a frontline Nurse from the University of Michigan Medical Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Short Form: &#8220;I Promise&#8221; (Quibi)<\/strong><br>Executive Producer, <strong>Jamal Henderson<\/strong> accepted the award, which is the inaugural award for short form at the AAFCA TV Honors, presented by actor <strong>Derek Luke<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Christopher Emdin<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Science Education at the Teachers College at Columbia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AAFCA ADCOLOR Breakout Creative of the Year: Janet Mock, &#8220;Pose&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Hollywood&#8221; (Netflix)<\/strong><br>Awarded to a creative of color whose career, in its early stages, demonstrates a vision and commitment to diverse and inclusive stories that reset and disrupt the industry across multiple platforms. Presented to writer\/director\/producer, <strong>Janet Mock<\/strong> by &#8220;Pose&#8221; stars <strong>MJ Rodriquez<\/strong>, <strong>Hallie Sahar<\/strong>, and<strong> Indya Moore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/John-Legend-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-146468\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Docuseries: &#8220;Atlanta&#8217;s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children&#8221; (HBO) and &#8220;The Last Dance&#8221; (ESPN Films\/Netflix)<\/strong><br>The Executive Producers of &#8220;Atlanta&#8217;s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children,&#8221;<strong> John Legend, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius, Maro Chermayeff<\/strong>, and<strong> Sam Pollard<\/strong> accepted the award, presented to them by &#8220;P-Valley&#8221; stars <strong>Brandee Evans<\/strong> and <strong>Nicco Annan<\/strong> and Chicago Fire Lieutenant <strong>Quentin Curtis<\/strong> who is also the founder and president of the Black Fire Brigade. &#8220;The Last Dance&#8221; team was unable to attend and AAFCA accepted the honor on their behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best TV Movie: &#8220;The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel&#8221; (Lifetime)<\/strong><br>Music Director <strong>Donald Lawrence<\/strong>, Director <strong>Christine Swanson<\/strong> and Co-Executive Producer <strong>Holly Carter<\/strong> accepted the award, presented by <strong>Simone Missick<\/strong>, the star of CBS&#8217; &#8220;All Rise,&#8221; the Emmy\u00ae nominated star of NBC&#8217;s &#8220;The Good Place&#8221; <strong>William Jackson Harper<\/strong> and <strong>Reverend Dr. Jamal H. Bryant<\/strong> from the New Birth Church in Atlanta, GA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breakthrough Performers: Jeremy Pope \/ Laura Harrier &#8220;Hollywood&#8221; (Netflix)<\/strong><br><strong>Jeremy Pope<\/strong> and<strong> Laura Harrier<\/strong> accepted the award, presented to them by &#8220;Entertainment Tonight&#8221; host <strong>Kevin Frazier<\/strong> and EMT professional Chief <strong>Tanya Rivers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Sterling-K-Brown-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-146466\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Male Performance: Sterling K. Brown &#8220;This is Us&#8221; (NBC)<\/strong><br>This marks the second year in a row that <strong>Sterling K. Brown<\/strong>, the Emmy\u00ae winning star of &#8220;This is Us&#8221; has won the Best Actor award at the AAFCA TV Honors. Brown is currently nominated for two Emmys\u00ae &#8211; Best Actor in a Drama Series for &#8220;This is Us&#8221; and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for &#8220;The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,&#8221;- making Emmy history as the first Black lead\/supporting actor to be nominated in both drama and comedy categories. Actress <strong>Sheryl Lee Ralph<\/strong> (&#8220;Ray Donovan&#8221;) and <strong>Dr. Ala Stanford<\/strong> of Stanford Pediatric Surgery, who founded the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium in Philadelphia, PA., presented the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best TV Comedy: &#8220;Insecure&#8221; (HBO)<\/strong><br>Showrunner <strong>Prentice Penny<\/strong> accepted the honor which was presented by actress <strong>Tichina Arnold<\/strong> (star of CBS&#8217; &#8220;The Neighborhood&#8221;) and LAPD Deputy Police Chief <strong>Regina A. Scott<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best TV Drama: &#8220;For Life&#8221; (ABC)<\/strong><br>Creator <strong>Hank Steinberg<\/strong> and series star <strong>Nicholas Pinnock<\/strong> accepted the honor, presented by &#8220;Queen Sugar&#8221; stars <strong>Tina Lifford<\/strong> and <strong>Omar J. Dorsey<\/strong> and WeDat&#8217;s Chicken and Shrimp Restaurant Founder and Owner <strong>Greg Tillery <\/strong>of New Orleans, who has been on the front lines of Covid-19 donating food to frontline workers and others in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inclusion Award: MACRO Television Studios<\/strong><br><strong>Marta Fernandez<\/strong>, the President of MACRO Television Studios accepted the award which recognizes a network or production entity that demonstrates a powerful commitment to diversity and inclusion. AAFCA Founder and President <strong>Gil Robertson<\/strong> and award-winning KNBC Journalist <strong>Beverly White<\/strong> presented the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Viola-Davis-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-146469\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Best Actress: <strong>Viola Davis<\/strong>, &#8220;How to Get Away with Murder&#8221; (ABC) <strong>Viola Davis<\/strong> was presented the award by fellow Oscar\u00ae winner <strong>Octavia Spencer<\/strong> and Mayor of Montgomery, <strong>AL Steven Reed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TV Icon Award: Kenya Barris<\/strong><br><strong>Kenya Barris<\/strong>, creator of ABC&#8217;s &#8220;Black-ish&#8221; and &#8220;#blackAF&#8221; on Netflix, accepted this honor which recognizes a veteran of television who has forged a path in greatness and demonstrates a commitment to telling diverse stories.
