The event will be led by AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Executive Producer Cameo George.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 428 271'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Documenting-The-Struggle-with-Stanley-Nelson-event-card-e1603310908289-1024x649.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-147614\" width=\"428\" height=\"271\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Click <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/documenting-the-struggle-a-conversation-with-filmmaker-stanley-nelson-tickets-124719602689?utm_source=eventbrite&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=post_publish&amp;utm_content=shortLinkNewEma\">here<\/a><\/strong> to join this free event for a discussion on how these stories shaped and advanced the civil rights movement, how racial tensions are still playing out today and how public media can help elevate filmmakers of color in telling diverse stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, beginning in October 2020, WORLD Channel, in partnership with PBS, will\u00a0broadcast a series of documentaries that examine the civil rights movement in America,\u00a0reconciling the history that led to the nation\u2019s current racial reckoning.\u00a0From films such as AMERICAN EXPERIENCE\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Murder of Emmett Till<\/em>\u00a0and AMERICAN MASTERS\u2019\u00a0<em>Miles Davis: The Birth of Cool\u00a0<\/em>to\u00a0<em>Driving While Black,\u00a0<\/em>the films chronicle the history of Black Americans as well as the cultural and political forces which have shaped today\u2019s world.\u00a0 The films also will be available for streaming at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldchannel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worldchannel.org<\/a>. <em><strong>Race in America<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0films will air nationwide on Saturday nights at 8 pm ET\/ 9 pm PT from October through March 2021. <strong>The featured documentaries will include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>AMERICAN EXPERIENCE:\u00a0\u00a0<em>The Murder of Emmett Till<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; First aired in January 2003,\u00a0<em>The Murder of Emmett Till\u00a0<\/em>takes viewers back 65 years to August 1955, when a Black 14-year-old\u00a0whistled at a white woman in a grocery store in Money, Mississippi.\u00a0Emmett Till, a teen from Chicago, didn&#8217;t understand that he had broken the unwritten laws of the Jim Crow South until three days later, when two white men dragged him from his bed in the dead of night, beat him brutally and then shot him in the head. The murder and the trial horrified the nation and the world and was a spark that helped mobilize the Civil Rights movement.\u00a0<em>Streaming now at\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/worldchannel.org\/collection\/race-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>worldchannel.org<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 395 222'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Freedom-Riders-by-Stanley-Nelson-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-147617\" width=\"395\" height=\"222\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>AMERICAN EXPERIENCE:\u00a0\u00a0<em>Freedom Riders<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; From May 2011,\u00a0<em>Freedom Riders<\/em>\u00a0is the powerful, harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400\u00a0Black and white Americans risked their lives for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws in order to test and challenge a segregated interstate travel system, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.\u00a0<em>Streaming now at\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/worldchannel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>worldchannel.org<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em>Driving While Black<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; This 2020 feature-length documentary explores the role of the automobile in the lives of African Americans in the early twentieth century. For ten weeks that summer, white students from the North joined activists on the ground for a massive effort that would do what had been impossible so far: force the\u00a0\u00a0media and the country to take notice\u00a0of the\u00a0 shocking violence and massive injustice taking place in Mississippi.\u00a0<em>Airs October 24, 2020 at\u00a0<\/em>8 pm ET\/ 9 pm PT\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em>John Lewis \u2013 Get in the Way<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; The first major documentary biography of John Lewis,\u00a0<em>Get in the Way<\/em>\u00a0is a riveting, highly personalized narrative of an epic chapter in U.S. history. The film\u00a0follows the journey of the civil rights hero, congressman, and human rights champion.
