Through an in-depth examination of the state of Black mental health, CCBFF seeks to amplify stories that explore issues involving mental health, racism and discrimination and offer pathways towards the healing for African diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 400 400'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Main-2020-Graphic.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-148513\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"\/><figcaption>4<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The 2020 Capital City Black Film Festival will be held on <strong>Dec 4-6<\/strong> and will be entirely virtual, so you can watch this year\u2019s selections from the comfort of your couch.<\/li><li>There are 5 ticket types (VIP, GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE, &amp; a CCBFF SAMPLER PASS). Virtual passes are available via <a href=\"https:\/\/capcitybff.eventive.org\/passes\/buy\">https:\/\/capcitybff.eventive.org\/passes\/buy<\/a><\/li><li>Choose from dozens of screenings featuring brand new short films, documentaries, and feature-length submissions from filmmakers all over the country.<\/li><li>Participate in the filmmaker talkback that takes place after each screening.<\/li><li>Hear from industry leaders and innovators as part of CCBFF\u2019s 2020 slate of panels<\/li><li>Get access to spotlighted film screenings on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The ambassador for this year\u2019s festival is \u201cblackish\u201d star <strong>Anthony Anderson<\/strong> and he will be speaking one-on-one with CCBFF about his career and experiences in the industry.<\/li><li>The keynote discussion \u201cDiscovering Your Breakthrough\u201d will be presented by <strong>Delta Research and Educational Foundation<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/deltasigmatheta.org\/dref.html\">DREF<\/a>).<\/li><li>The panel will include the \u201cOprah Winfrey Show\u201d therapist-in-residence Dr. Robin L. Smith, \u201cFresh Prince of Bel-Air\u201d star <strong>Daphne Maxwell Reid <\/strong>and creator of Showtime\u2019s Emmy Award nominated series \u201cSoul Food\u201d<strong> Felicia Henderson.<\/strong><\/li><li>The opening night event will feature a presentation of the highly anticipated Harlem Lights Award, which is being awarded to Austin native, multi-talented actor and musician <strong>Mehcad Brooks<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Festival goers can expect powerful programming, special screenings and industry panels that cover mental health in the entertainment industry, overcoming racism and trauma and more industry-specific topics.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Harlem Lights Award<\/strong> recognizes luminaries in all fields of endeavor, especially the creative arts. Austin\u2019s own actor, producer and President of JuVee Productions Julius Tennon was the first recipient of the award. Other honorees include actor <strong>Louis Gossett Jr<\/strong>., the late major league baseball player, coach and manager <strong>Don Baylor<\/strong> and director, writer, producer and \u201cReel Divas\u201d cofounder <strong>Deborah Riley Draper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 400 400'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Harlem-Lights-Award.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-148548\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChoosing Mehcad for this important distinction was personal for me. He has a true passion for the arts, brings characters to life on the big screen and a love for storytelling through music,\u201d CCBFF Executive Director <strong>Winston G. Williams<\/strong> said: \u201cSeeing Black Austinite\u2019s succeed in the industry has inspired me to continue this festival year after year. <strong>Mehcad\u2019s <\/strong>success is a success for all of Austin and to see him use his platform to educate and speak out again injustice leaves me beaming with pride.\u201d  <strong>Brooks<\/strong> currently plays character James Olsen in CW\u2019s \u201cSupergirl,\u201d and is best known for his roles in Tyler Perry\u2019s \u201cNobody\u2019s Fool,\u201d and \u201cA Fall from Grace.\u201d He is also starring as \u201cJax\u201d in the highly anticipated upcoming film \u201cMortal Kombat.\u201d As racial tensions intensified across the country this year, Brooks leveraged his following on social media to speak up about injustice and educate followers \u2013 which was sometimes met with resistance. His coined phrase \u201cjust a kid from Austin\u201d speaks to his commitment to celebrate his upbringing and elevate the city of Austin\u2019s impact on a global scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 400 400'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/HealingStartsAtHome_Updated_v2-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-148549\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As CCBFF explores the impact that unaddressed trauma and issues have on the ability for Black creatives to thrive, they looked no further than<strong> Iyanla Vanzant\u2019s<\/strong> show \u201cIyanla Fix My Life.\u201d Recently, <strong>Iyanla<\/strong> featured a family that was struggling to overcome unresolved issues which featured reality television star <strong>Shay Johnson<\/strong> (\u201cFlava of Love\u201d, \u201cCharm Skool\u201d, \u201cLove and Hip Hop\u201d) and her siblings: musician Emjay (\u201cLove and Hip Hop\u201d), renowned speaker <strong>Dr. Joe Johnson<\/strong> and sister-in-law and therapist<strong> Brandi Pritchard-Johnson<\/strong>.  While the show turned to be a tumultuous struggle between <strong>Dr. Vanzant<\/strong> and <strong>Shay<\/strong>, the family was able to address issues that had been plaguing them for years.
