The Netflix trailer for ‘Malcolm & Marie’<\/strong> dropped recently and fans (me included) have been chomping at the bit for the chance to watch Zendaya<\/strong> and John David Washington<\/strong> on screen together, in black-and-white. \u201cThis is not a love story,\u201d<\/em> the trailer advertises. \u201cThis is the story of love.\u201d <\/em>If this sneak peak is any indication of how intense and introspective the upcoming film will be, then we are in for a memorable cinematic experience. The film is scheduled for release on February 5th on Netflix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written and directed by Sam Levinson<\/strong>, the film\u2019s trailer features Washington<\/em> as Malcolm, a filmmaker, and Zendaya<\/em> as his girlfriend, Marie. Taking place over the course of one evening, the couple return home after Malcolm\u2019s film premiere as they anxiously await his film’s critical response. The evening takes a turn as revelations about their relationship surface, testing the couple\u2019s love. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malcolm & Marie<\/strong>\u00a0was executive produced by Will Greenfield, Aaron L. Gilbert, Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, <\/strong>and Scott Mescudi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, from June 17 to July 2. At the time, Levinson and Zendaya were both involved in the HBO show\u00a0Euphoria<\/a><\/em>, which had stopped production due to the pandemic. Shooting took place entirely at the Caterpillar House, a private home in\u00a0Carmel, California<\/a>. The film followed local COVID-19 safety protocols, including the entire cast and crew being quarantined during shooting, as well as two weeks before and after shooting, daily temperature checks, and increased sanitation measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zendaya<\/em> explained to the podcast\u00a0OTHERtone<\/a>\u00a0why she filmed the secret movie, saying: “It\u2019s basically kind of birthed within quarantine conversations Sam [Levinson] and I had in wanting to create something safely\u2026I really wanted to be creative and I hadn’t worked in a long time, through that year anyway. The last thing I acted on was Euphoria, and I had a year of not really doing any acting.
