The nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards<\/strong> were announced today (March 15), live from London, via a global live stream on Oscars.org<\/a>, the Academy\u2019s digital platforms, an international satellite feed and broadcast media. See the ‘2021 Black Oscar Nominations – The Complete List’ with Black category nominees highlighted in red below. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Viola Davis’ makes Oscars history as the most-nominated Black actress ever<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Viola Davis,<\/strong> who was nominated for best actress for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom<\/strong>,” is now the most-nominated Black actress ever, with four nominations, and the only Black woman with two best actress nominations. Viola Davis <\/strong>(“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) and Andra Day<\/strong> (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”) are nominated in the best actress category together, which makes 2021 the second year in Oscars history where two Black women have been nominated for Best Actress in a single year. The last and only time two Black women were nominated for Best Actress was at the 45th Academy Awards in 1973, where Cecily Tyson (“Sounder”) and Diana Ross (“Lady Sings the Blues”) were nominated together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another noteworthy first – ‘Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson’ (\u201cMa Rainey’s Black Bottom\u201d) <\/strong>became the first Black women to be nominated in the Makeup and Hairstyling category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Judas and the Black Messiah<\/strong>‘ marks the first time an all-Black producing team has been nominated for best picture award<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“Judas and the Black Messiah,”<\/strong> received six nominations and is competing for best picture along with “The Father,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” 2021 marks the first time an all-Black producing team (Shaka King, Ryan Coogler <\/strong>and Charles D. King<\/strong>) has been nominated for the best picture award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nominated in the best supporting actor category are Leslie Odom Jr. <\/strong>for “One Night in Miami”<\/strong> and Daniel Kaluuya<\/strong> and Lakeith Stanfield<\/strong> for “Judas and the Black Messiah.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Soul,”<\/strong> directed by Pete Docter and Dana Murray, was nominated for best animated feature film of the year; Jon Batiste<\/strong>, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross received a nomination for achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 93rd Oscars<\/strong> will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021,<\/strong> at Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET\/5 p.m. PT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
