British actor and producer Noel Clarke<\/a> will be the 2021 recipient of the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award at the 74th British Academy Film Awards<\/a> held April 10 & 11 2021 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The star of hit films Kidulthood<\/a> and Star Trek 2<\/a> and a former Doctor Who<\/a> companion, Clarke has been a familiar face in British TV and film for two decades. Even so, he has not always got his dues as a black actor. For example, for the 2019 romcom Fisherman\u2019s Friends<\/a>. It featured six white co-stars, including James Purefoy and Daniel Mays. Although Clarke\u2019s name was included, his face was not. Clarke tweeted about it. \u201cI had one [co-star] text me and be like, \u2018Take that down, you\u2019ve offended me.\u2019 I just said, \u2018Well, you can go fuck yourself.\u2019 So everyone\u2019s entitled to their opinion. It\u2019s not blaming them,\u201d he told The Guardian says. \u201cIt just sparked conversation.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an unfortunate experience that Clarke and actors like him have had to live throughout his career; being respected in an industry that allows for just a few black actors working regularly in the UK. Unlike many of his black male contemporaries who moved to the US and found success, Clarke\u2019s response was to make vehicles for himself to star in \u2013 and he\u2019s continued to do that for 15 years. BAFTA is honoring that resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in 2007, Clarke co-founded Unstoppable Entertainment that has produced the hit police action-drama Bulletproof<\/a> in which he stars alongside Ashley Walters<\/a> \u2013 two black actors playing the lead roles, a rarity in the UK. The latest edition of the show, shot before the pandemic, is a special, where the visit their families in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Unstoppable Entertainment<\/a> has produced over 10 feature films including Jessica Hynes\u2019 directorial debut \u201cThe Fight.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clarke has kept working constantly \u2013 writing, producing, directing, acting \u2013 to maintain his career. \u201cIt\u2019s by necessity,\u201d he laughs. \u201cJack of all trades, master of none. I\u2019ve had to be someone that\u2019s done everything. If I hadn\u2019t, I would not be talking to you right now,” Clarke told The Guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
