Because we’ve binged on everything from stories of British royalty<\/a> to private investigators in South Africa<\/a>, we love exploring international series and quickly have gotten hooked on the French language<\/a> shows and the actors that bring their stories to life. Omar Sy is one of those characters. We fell in love with him in films like ‘The Intouchables,<\/a>” “Jurassic World”<\/a> and “Transformers: The Last Night,<\/a>” where he played supporting characters. But most recently, Sy has been able to shine as a lead, starring in a crime comedy series on Netflix, Lupin<\/em><\/a>, starring as a slick yet dashingly handsome con man. Exactly one year after opening offices in Paris, the binge-worthy streaming network announced its new French slate, including two sequels: a follow-up to On the Other Side of the Tracks<\/em> from Louis Leterrier,<\/a> (“The Incredible Hulk”) starring Omar Sy, and the sequel to Guillaume Pierret<\/a>‘s Netflix feature Lost Bullet<\/em> starring St\u00e9fi Celma, which racked up some 37 million views over its first 28 days in release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other new French female driven series greenlit by Netflix include The 7 lives of Lea<\/em>, created by Charlotte Sanson<\/a>, in which a teenager travels back in time to 1991 and finds herself waking up every morning in the body of a different person; and the thriller Bendo<\/em> from by Nawell Madani,<\/a> in which a TV journalist, must unite with her sisters to try and pay back \u20ac2 million to a major drug dealer before the end of Ramadan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

France has become a major focus for Netflix as it bulks up its local-language production in Europe. The streaming plans to produce or launch a total of 27 films, series, and documentaries in the territory this year.\u00a0We will wait to see how much of this is supporting Black French cinema creators but it’s good to know that Netflix is investing in new French talent with partnerships with French schools and creative associations including Gobelins, La F\u00e9mis, 1000 Visages association, and the Kourtrajm\u00e9 school. This year will see the streamer set up a mentoring program with French audiovisual group Collectif 50\/50 and we’re excited about that what these students will learn and create.
