The 36th annual Film\u00a0Independent Spirit Awards,<\/a> recognizing the best work in the independent space, held a virtual awards show on April 22, with \u201cNomadland\u201d<\/a> taking home the most honors of the night with four statues. Television was also celebrated for the first time at the ceremony, with \u201cI May Destroy You<\/a>\u201d and \u201cUnorthodox\u201d taking home top honors. The fully immersive virtual ceremony featured presenters Adam Sandler, Renee Zellweger, Daveed Diggs<\/a>, Julia Garner, Kathryn Hahn, Annie Murphy and Lulu Wang.\u00a036th Independent Spirit Awards Highlights<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were many fun moments during the\u00a02021 Independent Spirit Awards<\/a> which relished in how work was done in the past year included appearances from\u00a0“<\/em>Hamilton<\/a>” and “Soul”\u00a0star Daveed Digg,<\/a> Cate Blanchett, Laura Dern, Michaela Coe<\/a>l who addressed the audience in full flowing hair and beat face; Kumail Nanjiani, who also appeared from his house and joked that quarantine has been going for “seven years,” and Adam Sandler wearing an adidas jacket and overgrown man beard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the winners of the evening was Chloe Zhao for directing\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>, which also won the coveted best feature award. Yuh-Jung Youn was recognized for her performance in\u00a0Minari,<\/em> Darius Marder for best first feature for\u00a0Sound of Metal<\/em>, the ensemble cast of\u00a0I May Destroy You<\/em>, and <\/em>writer and director\u00a0Emerald Fennell for her\u00a0Promising Young Woman<\/em>\u00a0screenplay. 36th Independent Spirit Awards Highlights<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 36th annual event aired, just three days before the Oscars, on IFC and AMC+.\u00a0Judas and the Black Messiah<\/em>\u00a0director Shaka King serves as honorary chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Night in Miami<\/a><\/em>\u00a0was honored with\u00a0the Robert Altman Award, presented by Don Cheadle to the cast and crew, who discussed the film’s creative and social impact over a montage of clips. Regina King described her directorial debut \u2014 depicting a\u00a0fictional night where Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown meet to celebrate Ali’s victory but end up discussing their roles in the Civil Rights Movement. Leslie Odom Jr., who portrays Cooke in the film, added that the cast fully recognized screenwriter Kemp Powers’ goal of putting forth “a private conversation publicly about Black life and our humanity.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I May Destroy You<\/em>\u00a0Winning the Ensemble Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I May Destroy You\u00a0<\/em>was awarded the best ensemble trophy, recognizing the\u00a0HBO limited series cast including Michaela Coel, Paapa Essiedu, Weruche Opia and Stephen Wight. The series also received a win for best new scripted series earlier in the show. The\u00a0boundary-pushing series created, executive produced,\u00a0co-directed, written by lead star Coel is based on her personal story of sexual assault.\u00a0–<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I felt nothing but encouragement and support from my wonderful humble cast who brought these characters to life in a way that I never imagined possible,” Coel said as she expressed her gratitude to the castmembers. \u201cI realize that this project had a lot of giving actors who were very giving of themselves to these character to the stories to the truth of these characters and stories,\u201d said\u00a0Opia.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
