Eight simultaneous outdoor screenings of the film were held around New York City and the 5 boroughs. This new classic film, directed by Jon Chu, is an epic musical and visual production adapted from the Tony award-winning musical by the same name produced and created by New York\u2019s own Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda also created the mega hit Broadway musical Hamilton.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Anthony-Ramos-as-Usnavi-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-153047\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In The Heights<\/em> is long (2 hours and 23 minutes), but goes by quickly, if you like musicals, with its high energy and young cast. Every second is packed with music, dance, color, tense moments and happy times. The moving love story\u00a0lights up the screen and tells the story of young Washington Heights bodega owner Usnavi, played by Anthony Ramos (\u201cHamilton,\u201d \u201cA Star is Born\u201d). Usnavi hopes, imagines, and sings about leaving the city and traveling to the Dominican Republic, the Island of his father, in search of a better life. The film also stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2019\/01\/corey-hawkins-joins-anthony-ramos-in-film-adaptation-of-in-the-heights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Corey Hawkins<\/a> (\u201cStraight Outta Compton\u201d), Leslie Grace (\u201cSuper Junior\u201d), Melissa Barrera (telenovela- \u201cSiempre Tuya Acapulco\u201d), Olga Merediz (Broadway\u2019s \u201cIn The Heights\u201d), Gregory Diaz IV (\u201cVampires vs The Bronx\u201d), Dascha Polanco (\u201cOrange is the New Black\u201d) and Jimmy Smits (\u201cNYPD Blue\u201d, \u201cThe West Wing,\u201d \u201cStar Wars: Revenge of the Sith\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woven within a story about a vibrant Hispanic community, is a love story. And woven within that love story is a story of four young people discovering their dreams and desires. We watch as they each come to realize what their dreams could look like in reality and see them begin to work toward making those dreams come true.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Corey-and-Nina-2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-153048\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlights of the film include beautiful scenes of the streets, along with sparkling sunsets and shots of the George Washington Bridge that overlooks the community. The production was shot entirely on location in and around Washington Heights before COVID shut the entire city down. The hard-working people of the Heights were impacted by the pandemic, but this close knit network of families, a mix of Dominican, Puerto Rican, Mexican and Cuban, pulled together and helped each other get through it.
