{"id":153594,"date":"2021-06-30T14:13:42","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T18:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/?p=153594"},"modified":"2021-06-30T14:13:44","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T18:13:44","slug":"awards-rules-and-campaign-regulations-approved-for-94th-oscars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/awards-rules-and-campaign-regulations-approved-for-94th-oscars\/","title":{"rendered":"AWARDS RULES AND CAMPAIGN REGULATIONS APPROVED FOR 94TH OSCARS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Academy&#8217;s Board of Governors has approved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/oscars\/rules-eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rules<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/oscars\/rules-eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaign regulations<\/a>\u00a0for the 94th Academy Awards.<br><br>As previously announced, the\u00a0<strong>eligibility period<\/strong>\u00a0for Academy Awards consideration will return to the standard December 31 deadline: a feature film must have a qualifying release date between\u00a0<strong>March 1, 2021<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>and December 31, 2021<\/strong>.\u00a0 With theatrical exhibition still impacted by the pandemic this year, eligibility requirements for the 94th Academy Awards will be consistent with the addendums made for the 93rd Awards season and can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/sites\/oscars\/files\/94th_oscars_eligibility.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 For films that open in theaters, the six qualifying U.S. metropolitan areas are Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, and apply to General Entry categories as well as the Documentary and Short Film categories.\u00a0 Following this year, the Academy intends to expand the qualifying requirements for the 95th Awards.<br><br>Additionally, beginning with the 94th Academy Awards, the\u00a0<strong>Best Picture<\/strong>\u00a0category will be set at 10 nominees, rather than a fluctuating number of nominations from year to year.\u00a0 This was previously announced in June 2020.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>In the\u00a0<strong>International Feature Film\u00a0<\/strong>category, key rule amendments made in the preliminary round of voting for the 93rd Awards and approved in January 2021 remain unchanged.\u00a0 This includes an expanded shortlist of 15 films and members from all Academy branches being invited to opt in and participate in the preliminary and nominations rounds of voting.\u00a0 Members must meet a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.<br><br>The Board of Governors approved other rules changes for the 94th Awards including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In the&nbsp;<strong>Sound<\/strong>&nbsp;category, there will now be a preliminary round of voting for the Sound award to determine a shortlist of 10 films.&nbsp; Prior to nominations voting, Sound Branch members will be invited to a presentation of the shortlisted achievements, similar to the process in the Visual Effects and Makeup &amp; Hairstyling categories.&nbsp; The entire Sound Branch will vote to select the shortlist as well as nominations.<\/li><li>In the&nbsp;<strong>Music (Original Score)<\/strong>&nbsp;category, for a score to be eligible, it must comprise a minimum of 35% of the total music in the film, lowered from 60%.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>In the&nbsp;<strong>Music (Original Song)&nbsp;<\/strong>category, no more than five songs from any one film may be submitted.<\/li><li>In the&nbsp;<strong>Documentary Short Subject<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Animated Short Film<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Live Action Short Film<\/strong>&nbsp;categories, the shortlist will expand from 10 to 15 films.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Submission deadlines are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Documentary Short Subject \u2013 Friday, October 15, 2021<br>Animated Short Film \u2013 Friday, October 15, 2021<br>Live Action Short Film \u2013 Friday, October 15, 2021<br>Animated Feature Film \u2013 Monday, November 1, 2021<br>Documentary Feature \u2013 Monday, November 1, 2021<br>International Feature Film \u2013 Monday, November 1, 2021<br>Original Score \u2013 Monday, November 1, 2021<br>Original Song \u2013 Monday, November 1, 2021<br>General Entry categories \u2013 Monday, November 15, 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campaign regulations, which specify how companies and individuals may market to Academy members any movies and achievements eligible for the 94th Academy Awards, were also updated.\u00a0 As a reminder, the mailings of DVDs, CDs and physical screenplays are discontinued starting this year.\u00a0 Access to the Academy Screening Room will continue to be made available for all eligible releases.\u00a0 Digital links to materials will be permitted.<br><br>For the complete 94th Academy Awards rules, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/oscars\/rules-eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oscars.org\/rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2021\/06\/the-academy-to-honor-danny-glover-samuel-l-jackson-more-with-oscars-at-2022-governors-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Academy to Honor Danny Glover, Samuel L.
