Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences<\/a> announced the list of invites to be offered membership to the prestigious organization. A total of 395 new artists are invited to become members. Amongst the artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures include actor Yaya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman<\/em>), actress Lavern Cox (Orange is the New Black<\/em>), Actress\/Singer Andra Day (The United States Vs. Billie Holiday<\/em>), director Shaka King<\/a> (Judas & The Black Messiah<\/em>) and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a goal of diversifying membership, the 2021 class is comprised of 46% women, 39% underrepresented ethnic\/racial communities, and 53% international from 49 countries outside of the United States.\u00a0 There are 89 Oscar nominees, including 25 winners, among the invitees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight individuals (noted by an asterisk) have been invited to join the Academy by multiple branches.\u00a0 These individuals must select one branch upon accepting membership.

The number of invites to membership was cut to roughly half that of recent years. This was done to enable steady future growth and to ensure the necessary infrastructure, staff resources and environment to support all Academy members.

The Academy’s Board of Governors voted on branch-specific guidelines to be applied in determining this year’s new membership invitees.\u00a0 Oscar winners and nominees were considered without limitation by applicable branches.\u00a0 Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
