{"id":153922,"date":"2021-07-12T13:58:27","date_gmt":"2021-07-12T17:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/?p=153922"},"modified":"2021-07-12T13:58:29","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T17:58:29","slug":"starz-greenlights-second-season-of-power-book-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/starz-greenlights-second-season-of-power-book-iii\/","title":{"rendered":"STARZ Greenlights Second Season of &#8220;POWER BOOK III&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ahead of its season one series premiere on Sunday, July 18, STARZ has greenlit a second season of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2020\/03\/power-book-iii-raising-kanan-adds-london-brown-malcolm-mays-quincy-brown-to-cast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Power Book III: Raising Kanan<\/a>.\u201d The season renewal comes amidst strong demand for the upcoming premiere of the third book in the growing \u201cPower\u201d Universe franchise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Set in South Jamaica Queens in the early \u201890s, the Power Book III prequel about the early years of the now-deceased iconic \u201cPower\u201d character Kanan Stark, portrayed in the original \u201cPower\u201d series by <strong>Curtis \u201c50 Cent\u201d Jackson<\/strong>, premieres on Sunday, July 18 at 8PM ET\/PT on STARZ and across all platforms in the U.S. and Canada, airing day and date internationally on the STARZPLAY premium streaming platform across its complete footprint in Europe, Latin America and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne season isn\u2019t enough to tell the coming-of-age story of Kanan Stark and his mother, Raq, a fierce and successful woman who is a force of nature,\u201d said Jeffrey Hirsch, President and CEO of STARZ. \u201cThe anticipation globally for more of the \u2018Power\u2019 Universe made it clear that the Kanan story needs to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third book in the \u201cPower\u201d Universe stars <strong>Patina Miller<\/strong> (\u201cMadam Secretary,\u201d <em>The Hunger Games Franchise<\/em>) as Raquel \u201cRaq\u201d Thomas and <strong>Mekai Curtis <\/strong>in the titular role as Kanan Stark. The cast also includes <strong>Omar Epps<\/strong> (\u201cHouse,\u201d <em>Love and Basketball<\/em>), London Brown (\u201cBallers\u201d), <strong>Malcolm Mays<\/strong> (\u201cThem,\u201d \u201cSnowfall\u201d), <strong>Hailey Kilgore<\/strong> (\u201cAmazing Stories\u201d), <strong>Joey Bada$$<\/strong> (<em>Two Distant Strangers<\/em>), <strong>Toby Sandeman<\/strong> (\u201cThe Royals\u201d), <strong>Shanley Caswell<\/strong> (<em>The Conjuring<\/em>) and <strong>Lovie Simone<\/strong> (<em>The Craft: Legacy<\/em>) with <strong>Quincy Brown<\/strong> (<em>Dope<\/em>) recurring. <strong>Antonio Ortiz<\/strong> (\u201cHigh Fidelity,\u201d \u201cThe Sinner\u201d) has been upped to a series regular role returning as Shawn \u201cFamous\u201d Figueroa in the second season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sascha Penn returns as creator and showrunner and will continue executive producing alongside Curtis \u201c50 Cent\u201d Jackson and Courtney A. Kemp. The \u201cPower\u201d Universe series are executive produced by \u201cPower\u201d creator and showrunner Courtney A. Kemp through her production company End of Episode and through her overall deal with Lionsgate Television, Curtis \u201c50 Cent\u201d Jackson through G-Unit Film and Television and Mark Canton through Atmosphere Entertainment MM. End of Episode\u2019s Chris Selak, Shana Stein and Bart Wenrich also executive produce. Kevin Fox also serves as executive producer. Lionsgate Television produces the series for STARZ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/RaisingKananStarz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Power Book III: Raising Kanan<\/a>\u201d Set in South Jamaica, Queens, in 1991, \u201cRaising Kanan\u201d is a prequel to the original \u201cPower\u201d franchise. It is a sprawling family drama that revolves around the coming of age of Kanan Stark; Ghost and Tommy\u2019s mentor, partner and adversary, who ultimately dies in a hail of gunfire in the eighth episode of Power\u2019s penultimate season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we catch up with Kanan here, he is the fifteen-year-old only child of Raquel \u201cRaq\u201d Thomas, a cocaine distributor with an emerging network of dealers across the city. Much like the original \u201cPower,\u201d \u201cRaising Kanan\u201d explores themes of identity, violence, and legacy, but it is also a deep dive into the very pathology of family; the unique, complicated and fraught dynamic between parent and child, mother and father, brother and sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an increasingly fractious world, family often feels like the only refuge from all the divisiveness and discord and yet, at the same time, we often discover that it is those closest to us who betray us and our values most. The first season of \u201cRaising Kanan\u201d is an exploration of these betrayals, the secrets and lies that accompany them and the ways in which they fester, metastasize and ultimately erupt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overarching theme of this first season is, \u201cYou reap what you sow.\u201d In other words, actions have consequences; betrayals are always uncovered; secrets are inevitably revealed; chickens come home to roost. Every character in \u201cRaising Kanan\u201d is hiding something. From the world, from each other, from themselves.
