Yahya spoke to\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>\u00a0on what it was like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/features\/yahya-abdul-mateen-ii-candyman-aquaman-2-matrix-4-1235051539\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">working alongside DaCosta<\/a>\u00a0to bring the horror film back to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/candyman-movie-poster-md.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-151014\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Deadline, <em>Candyman<\/em>\u00a0marks the second-highest grossing 3-day domestic weekend B.O. opening for a Black female director; that record owned by Ava DuVernay and her Disney movie\u00a0<em>A Wrinkle In Time\u00a0<\/em>which debuted in the No. 2 spot over the weekend of March 9-11, 2018 to $33.1M behind the fourth weekend of\u00a0<em>Black Panther\u00a0<\/em>which slotted No. 1 with $40.8M. DuVernay was the first Black female director to helm a $100M+ production from a major Hollywood studio. DaCosta also co-wrote\u00a0<em>Candyman\u00a0<\/em>with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2020\/06\/director-nia-dacosta-releases-new-candyman-teaser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Candyman<\/a><\/em>\u00a0director, Nia DaCosta, can be credited for campaigning for the film to hit theaters before any alternative releases. She was noted saying via her Twitter account, \u201cWe made Candyman to be seen in theaters\u2026Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories \u2014 how they shape each other, how they shape us.
