Haile Gerima’s iconic cultural masterpiece, Sankofa, <\/em>is getting 4k restoration and distribution from ARRAY Releasing, the distribution arm of Ava DuVernay<\/a>‘s arts and social impact collective ARRAY<\/a>. The digitally remastered version of legendary filmmaker’s work will debut on Netflix Friday, September 24, 2021. The film has not been viewed publicly since its small theatrical release in 1993.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sankofa<\/em> follows a modern African woman as she is transported back in time to experience slavery. Gerima is an incredibly influential filmmaker who operated outside of the studio system, and inspired many filmmakers with both the films he made, and the independent film distribution company he ran to release them.\u00a0Oyafunmike Ogunlano, Alexandra Duah, Kofi Ghanaba, \u00a0Nick Medley, Mutabaruka, Afemo Omilami<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sankofa<\/em> follows Mona (Oyafunmike Ogunlano), a Black American fashion model on a photo shoot in Cape Coast, Ghana. Through Mr. Gerima’s imaginative storytelling, she undergoes a journey back in time to a plantation in North America. There she becomes Shola, an enslaved African woman who labors in the master’s house and experiences the horrors of slavery firsthand. In becoming Shola, Mona recovers and confronts her ancestral identity and experience. While enduring monstrous trauma at the hands of white men who owned people for profit, Shola’s interactions with her fellow enslaved Africans are rich with humanity, respect and dignity for one another. Most notably, she connects with Shango (Mutabaruka), a rebellious African man who toils in the fields, and Nunu (Alexandra Duah), one of the few of the enslaved to remember her life in Africa before being stolen and terrorized by European traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born and raised in Ethiopia, Gerima immigrated to the United States in 1967. Following in the footsteps of his father, a dramatist and playwright, Gerima studied acting and directing at Chicago’s Goodman Theater before entering UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, where his exposure to Latin American films inspired him to mine his own cultural legacy. He became a leading member of the film movement widely known as L.A. Rebellion alongside Charles Burnett and Julie Dash), birthed in the late 60s, and his films are known for their exploration of the issues and history related to the African diaspora. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1996, Gerima co-founded an independent film company for the production and distribution of films, which also houses the Sankofa Video and Bookstore, in Washington, D.C. \u00a0The bookstore is a cultural and intellectual space that offers opportunities for self-expression, interaction, discussion and analysis through community events such as film screenings, book signings, scholar forums and artist showcases. Gerima continues to produce, distribute and promote his own films.
