If you’re wondering why Superman is trending today, it’s not because he’s receiving a new multi-million dollar movie from a major studio or getting a new outfit. It’s because DC<\/a> announced that Superman is coming out as bi-sexual. Well, his son actually. The heir to the DC throne is the child of classic hero Clark Kent and his beloved reporter wife Lois Lane – Jon Kent. The announcement was made today on DC’s site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the new Superman series, Superman: Son Of Kal-El<\/em>, Jon Kent is following in his father’s footsteps in more ways than one. He has fallen for news reporter Jay Nakamura. After initially striking up a friendship with reporter Nakamura, he and Jon become romantically involved in the pages of the fifth installment of the series from writer Tom Taylor (Dark Knights of Steel<\/em>) and artist John Timms (Harley Quinn<\/em>). Following a scene where Superman mentally and physically burns out from trying to save everyone that he can, Jay is there to care for the Man of Steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I\u2019m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea,\u201d said writer Tom Taylor. \u201cSuperman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

People, just when any news is made of a change to their oh-so-near-and-dear superheroes, are in a frenzy. Many fans took to twitter to express their support or outrage. Arizona state senator, Wendy Rogers, shared her disapproval for the news by tweeting, “Superman loves Louis Lane. Period. Hollywood is trying to make Superman gay and he is not. Just rename the new version Thooperman so we can all know the difference and avoid seeing it.” Rogers, failed to realize that she herself made Superman gay by pairing him with Louis<\/em> Lane – perhaps Lois’ long lost twin. She also missed the point that it’s actually the son of Superman who came out as bi-sexual – not gay – but to-may-to to-mah-to, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, but same side of the country – California state senator, Sydney Kamlager, shared her support for the new coupling by Tweeting “If Superman can handle it, so can the rest of us! It’s 2021, people. Let’s love. #NationalComingOutDay”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superman’s coming out is fresh off the heels of another DC hero coming out. Batman’s trusty sidekick Robin, Tim Drake, came out as bi-sexual in Batman: Urban Legends.\u00a0<\/em>The news received the same split reaction, to no one’s surprise. What’s more important than Superman’s sexuality though, is the fact that Jon is speaking up on political issues and is working to better the environment in the series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
