Cartoonist Keef Knight<\/strong> is now a popular activist on the rise, but he’s facing a world where “woke” has become big business. Can Keef and his friends bring about real change, or is it just about the dollar$? And can Keef navigate this new world without destroying what he’s become? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by the life and work of artist Keith Knight<\/strong>,\u00a0“Woke”\u00a0continues to upend Black nerd and activist culture, deftly satirizing with a wink and a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Woke”<\/em>\u00a0was developed by Marshall Todd and Keith Knight. The co-creators serve as executive producers alongside\u00a0Anthony King, Maurice “Mo” Marable, Richie Schwartz, John Will, Will Gluck, and Eric Christian Olsen. The comedy is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keith Edgar Knight Jr.<\/strong> is an American\u00a0cartoonist\u00a0and musician known for his\u00a0comic strips The K Chronicles<\/em>,\u00a0(Th)ink<\/em>, and\u00a0The Knight Life<\/em>. While his work is humorous and universal in appeal, he also often deals with political, social, and racial issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knight’s regular feature\u00a0The K Chronicles<\/em>, launched in the early 1990s, appears in various outlets, including\u00a0Daily Kos, and previously appeared in the\u00a0San Francisco Examiner<\/em>, while\u00a0(th)ink<\/em>\u00a0is published on several newspapers and websites, especially African-American sites. A syndicated daily strip,\u00a0The Knight Life<\/em>, was launched in 2008. Knight is also the artist for two strips appearing in\u00a0Mad<\/em>:\u00a0Father O’Flannity’s Hot Tub Confessions<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Bully Baby<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the March 14, 2012, strip of\u00a0The K Chronicles<\/em>, Knight announced he was working on a graphic novel about his brief (1984\u20131985) career as a professional\u00a0Michael Jackson\u00a0impersonator. The book will be entitled\u00a0I Was a Teenage Michael Jackson Impersonator<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knight also appeared in The Marginal Prophets, a\u00a0hip-hop\u00a0band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knight has become a\u00a0public speaker, with comic strip\u00a0slideshows\u00a0addressing racial illiteracy,\u00a0police brutality\u00a0and the role it has played since the early years of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2018 it was announced that\u00a0Hulu\u00a0would be producing a half-hour\u00a0sitcom, titled\u00a0Woke<\/em>, based on\u00a0The K Chronicles<\/em>\u00a0and events from Knight’s life. Woke<\/em>\u00a0debuted on September 9, 2020.\u00a0On November 17, 2020, Hulu renewed the series for a second season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2007,\u00a0The K Chronicles<\/em>\u00a0won the\u00a0Harvey Kurtzman Award<\/a>\u00a0for Best Syndicated Comic Strip. The other nominees were\u00a0Antiques: The Comic Strip<\/em>,\u00a0Doonesbury<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Maakies<\/a><\/em>, and\u00a0Mutts<\/em>. The K Chronicles<\/em>\u00a0has won the\u00a0Glyph Awards<\/a>\u00a0Best Comic Strip multiple times, including 2006,\u00a02007, 2009, and 2010.
