GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” joked Rock as he laughed.

Cut to Will Smith walking up on stage and slapping Rock in the face in front of a world-wide audience. Rock, and the rest of us were left bewildered as to what had just taken place. While the sound quickly got shut off on the U.S. telecast, we (seated in the audience) were privy to Smith’s LIVE emotional outburst:

“Keep my wife’s name out your f***** mouth,” he shouted from his seat.

It took a while for the moment to sink in; we initially thought it was part of the show but questioned that rationale when Rock fumbled on his words (announcing the winner for Best Documentary Feature) as he tried to recover from the sting and shock. The tension in the room could be sliced with a knife. Wild speculations and personal opinions inserted themselves in every conversation throughout the night, which overshadowed the wins and took away from the celebratory moment. Sigh.

After some much needed reflection Will Smith issued an apology on Instagram on Monday:

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructible. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable,” Smith wrote. “Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear, and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.”

Smith also went on to apologize to the Academy, the show’s producers, attendees and viewers. He also apologized to the family of Richard, Venus and Serena Williams. Smith won the best actor Oscar for portraying Richard Williams in the film King Richard shortly after the slap.

“I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us,” he said, referring to the team behind the King Richard film.
